I learnt a long time ago that CW had a great upgrade policy.... and this proves it:)

Question for CWMarketingGuy

CWMarketingGuy,
I'm not sure I get what your saying. Does the CD contain both a full version and an upgrade path? I know when going to 2, they recommended that you completely uninstall 1 first. I'm puting together a new system. My old system has 2XL. I was hoping to just load a full version of 3. Will I have to load 2XL and then choose the upgrade path to have the 2XL plug-ins available? Also, I have Project 5. I'm guessing I should load Sonar fully first, then load Project five, or does the order make a difference?

My interpretation of the situation is this: The CakeWalk Upgrade you purchase is identical in every respect to the full version of the software.

But because you already own a CakeWalk product, you are getting the latest version at a heavily discounted rate.

It's CakeWalk's way of standing by their customers.

You should be able to install the latest version without the presence of the previous version. That's how I see it.

That's what I figured also which is nice, but then how do you load your 2XL plugs into 3? Anyway, I'm placing the order tomorrow. I figure, I'll keep 2XL on the old machine and 3 on the new. That should confuse the heck out of me if I keep switching between versions! :D

Your plugs should automatically migrate when you do the install. If they don't you can reinstall the plugs only by picking the custom install choice on the previous versions install disc.
Keep in mind Sonar has a plugin manager that keeps track of plugs and lets you decide whether or not you want them enabled.

By doing it this way, you also get the 2.2 XL plug-ins that are not included in SONAR 3 : The fxpansion Dr-008, and Sonic Timeworks Timeworks EQ & CompressorX
So the DR-008 is not included in Sonar 3 Pro? That's too bad... but I'm glad I have Sonar 2 XL. :D

I think your question has basically been answered by the other posts. The CD-ROM that you get is identical to the one found in the shipping version. It is the full version, not an upgrade path.

You can install SONAR 3 side by side with SONAR 2. Then later uninstall SONAR 2 once you are comfortable with SONAR 3. SONAR's plug-ins are installed in a separate directory so that they can stay on your system after uninstalling the host application. That way you can use them in version 3.

It doesn't matter if you install SONAR or Project5 first, just make sure that neither is open when installing the other so that your plug-ins will register correctly.

Anything else?

Ok, that makes sense now. I like that you can have both versions on one machine. I always get a bit paranoid about installing software. I have to remind myself that I'm using WinXP not using Win98 any more.:D My order is in!

Great.:D Then it looks like our custom plug-presets get to be used in-tact on the new ver to.

Another quick question please. I was wondering about a 'view' in the 'Grouped Controls' that would show which groups are already in use. It's a small thing, but would save having to scan all the existing assigned controls to see which ones are already taken.
Thanks again.

hey CW marketing guy...

can you PLEASE tell me what is up with the paste to one track option when you paste tracks? why would you copy multiple separate tracks, and paste it all on one track...this has boggled me since CW 8

The only occasion I would want to do this would be when pasting all percussive tracks to a single track.

main bus

from the images of the console view on cakewalk.com it looks like they are using 4 subs and a main.

i hope that picture isn't lying. that means i don't have to do submixes of my back vocals by exporting to a new track.

that, with ultrafunk v3 (i have v2) and the virtual sampler makes it a good purchase for me.

hopefully when they talk about being able to assign 4 parameters from a track fx, they are also letting you create an envelope to control those parameters.

Here's the deal....

I have Ultrafunk 3.0
I have Vsampler 3.0
I have Sonar 2.0
I have the Lexicon plug in PSP 84

So what am I getting in the Producer vs. the Studio version other than these. Am I losing anything by not going to the Producer version?

By going with Producer, you would also get:
- The enhanced mixing console with per-channel EQ and assignable FX controls - very nice!
- The Lexicon Pantheon Reverb (what you have is a delay - the Pantheon is an actual top-of-the-line Lexicon verb!)
- A professional sample library.

BTW - how is it that you have Vsampler 3.0 if it's not out yet? ;)

The new Console has to be worth $300 on it's own... :D

That's something I'm not familiar with. You should email support@cakewalk.com

My guesses would be:

1. To Conserve screen real estate

2. Some people compose their MIDI drum tracks on separate tracks, once they are done, there might be no reason to keep them on separate tracks.

Apparently Sonar 3 supports skins! :)

It's not realy skins per-se. Skins would allow you to create new icons, buttons, etc.

You do have full control over the color scheme, and there are many presets.

The picture is telling the truth.

Yes, you can create envelopes to control those parameters. Think of the assignable FX controls as quick access to frequently used parameters.
