I asked beore and got no response so I'll try again before it slips into oblivion. Sonar 2 can only transmit MTC but could not send or receive song postion. Is Sonar 3 able to do this? Will it be able to transmit song postion?
AFAIK, SONAR has always supported Song Position Pointers.
Check your manual under "MIDI Sync" and also see Options | Project | Sync.

Furthermore, I want to interface it as much as possible with my Tascam DM24 mixing console. Will there be a Control Surface configuration specifically for the DM24? I would love to be able to arm tracks directly from my console. The current generic control surface tool has limited use. For the life of me I cannot configure fast-foward no matter how hard I try. PLAY, REC, REWIND, JOG all work okay. Go figure.
I believe that's up to Tascam - give 'em a ping.

I don't think that's gonna happen, but I'm totally behind the suggestion.

But for now, I support James:

Hey guys,

I'm afraid it might be too late in the production process to make any changes to the manual. I'll look into it, though.
We're here for ya. :)

The manual has already been printed...sorry :(

wish they would import this forum as an official cakewalk forum with moderators from the company, rather than the newsgroups which are a nightmare to navigate through.

AW - Cakewalk,

Question re Sample Rate Export.

Will SONAR be able to dither (is that the correct term for sample rate) the sample rate down to 44.1 from say 48 on export, or will it still only do just the bit rate?

Porter

Could I possible bring my post to attention again?

Thanks,

Porter

That IS the wrong term. Dithering applies to bit rates.

Master James -

Tell the Romulans that first of all you do not have to dither to go from 16 bits to 24. You only need to dither when reducing the bit rate. Adding extra bits does not require any dithering.

.............

Oh, BTW, don't touch the sample rate. If the end destination is CD, you should record at 44.1 and leave it that way.

..End of transmition ;)

Perhaps I should be more specific if I can. The DM24 can transmit and receive MTC and MMC (I know these are different). MMC can be an "open" or "closed" relatoinship for the DM24. "Open" means that the DM24 sends MMC but cannot receive. "Closed" means that MMC is freely passed between both the DM24 and Sonar 2.2. From what I understand Sonar (unlike my girlfriend) will not participate in anything but an "open" relationship. It will start and stop with the transport but I cannot do anything else.

All I want Sonar to do is sync with my DM24 or whatever relationship is necessary to use the transport, locate and automation on the DM24 to control sonar. Does that make sense? Apparently Logic can do this no problem.

Currently I am able to use smpte to LOCATE and AUTOMATE while mixing but it's not the optimal way to do things. Midi would be great. Please, please, please say this will work!

Thanks, RD

I'd suggest you contact our tech support about this, because that's what I'd have to do to answer your question. Might as well cut me out as the middleman...

I took your advice and called tech support. I described what I want to do regarding controlling Sonar with my DM24. After some discussion it was determined the problem is that Sonar 2 will not generate SMPTE/MTC. He went on to say that Sonar 3 will generate SMPTE/MTC and that should give me the communication I want with my DM24.

I thought I would post this here for you and anyone else who might be interested in SMPTE/MTC sync.

It looks like I have a very compelling reason to purchase Sonar 3.

Cheers, RD

I think they just should put an extra piece of paper in the box, telling the users that this is the place for Sonarians to be... :D

The piece of paper they should put in the box is a $100 bill.

or Euro, if you prefer :)

Hyperthreading...?

Excuse me for my ignorance, but what is Hyperthreading?

Hyperthreading is internal to the CPU, such as an Intel P4. Basically, it means the CPU is able to run two or more "threads" (programs) at the same time. The program must be written properly to support it.

However.....

All parts of your system must support hyper threading for it to work properly. Intel touts Sonar *2.0* as a program which works well with hyperthreading, but when I tried to use it, I had problems. I ended up having to disable it, then I got a stable system. I'm running Windows XP Pro, so the OS shouldn't be a problem, but it could have been my video driver, or my audio driver, or my MIDI driver, or my Mackie control driver, etc. etc.
