So, what are you working on?

I've been reading up and spending a lot of my studio time trying to up the quality level of my recordings. I'm finding it difficult to break the analog mind set of pushing everything as close to the red as I can when tracking and mixing. I did it that way for so long it just seems wrong to do otherwise. But you can sure hear and feel the difference when you give it some headroom.

I'm working on distorted guitar tone. That is so damned hard for me I can't believe it.

I got a wild hair up my ass so today I decided and started to cover the Ramones entire first album. :laughings:

I'm working on H.G. Wells' Invisible Man. After that, it'll be some ghost stories ready for Christmas.

What am I up to? I'm glad you asked. I'm reading Mixerman's "Zen and Art of Mixing". It's a decent read so far. His views on summing really got me thinking about my setup so I bought $10 worth of resisters and I'm putting together a passive analog summing network. It's something to do anyways.

You are a f***ing animal!

Well, let's be real here....they're not hard, the average song length is about 2 minutes, and I've been playing them since I was around 16. It shouldn't have even taken as long as it did. :laughings:

Did ya get 'em done in one take? I'd imagine setting up the mics would take longer than the actual recording. :D

Most of em were one take. There were a few where I'd hit a cymbal in the wrong place or play the hats open when they're supposed to be closed or drop a stick, so I'd redo them. And one of them has a little tempo change, so I had to map that out with the clicker and do a few practice runs to get the timing right in the change. All in all though, very simple. Wham bam thank you maam. The guitars will be much harder.

Christ, that's still impressive, man. You're on a roll. I love that feeling. Can't wait to hear it all.

Thanks.

I can't decide how true I wanna stay to the original though. The drums are pretty dead-nuts acurate - playing wise - but there's two ways I can go with the guitars/bass:

The Ramones way - for that one album, they put one guitar track hard right, and one bass track hard left. Drums in the middle. Double tracked vocals hard panned L and R. That's it. Pretty basic. Still sounds huge though. On a few songs there's an occasional little overdub guitar on the left for certain parts. But mostly it's bare bones.

The Greg way, aka, the "modern" way....two rhythm tracks panned wide, bass up the middle.

So I don't know. The Ramones way sounds pretty lopsided on headphones and monitors but sounds fine on normal systems like the home or car stereo. The normal way sounds fine everywhere, but it won't be true to how they did it. I dunno. Maybe I'll do two versions. :D

(I hope Greg comes back soon)

I have 12 new originals that I want to cut down to 10, along with about 6 covers that I'll choose 2 or 3 from.

I was pretty much ready to put another CD together, but now I'm going back and re-doing lead vocals on a lot of them, so release date has been pushed back. I know you're all waiting on the edges of your seats. :D
