i'm looking to replace my mxl 603 mics. they're certainly not bad, but i'm just looking to upgrade all of my mics. i'm hoping to spend $500-$800.

i recently decided to buy the AT4050 for vocals, but i'm looking for a complimentary small diaphragm to record acoustic guitar, glockenspiel, tambourine, bells, perhaps some organ or piano, etc...right now i'm looking at the AKG 451. does anyone have any other suggestions? thanks!

You can't go wrong owning a pair of SM81s. A flat response, over a hyped top end, is why I prefer them in the studio and live recording applications.

them at4051's are nice. however, they are extremely prone to internal overloading and or have body resonance issues.
I have a single AT4047 and notice what appears to be big distortion when a singer really lets loose on this mic. He is 12"+ from the mic, with a pop screen in between. Levels are -3 or lower in Sonar, no digital splats.

I've not taken the time to see if this occurs with all mics (meaning other equipment is the issue). The comment above made me remember I've heard this a time or two, and with various powerful singers.

In the price range you are talking about, I would recommend having a look at the Peluso CEMC6 matched pair. They are really great mics for acoustic guitar!

Well I think I have a good ear... :) Hey Travis try compare the MXL 2001 then the CAD E100, if you still can't hear the difference either you are a drummer hehehe :p or you need a good set of monitor or headphone.

I can hear the differences in the mics but I don't hear enough to say that I would absolutely pick one mic over another. I just don't think the true characteristics of the mics come thru.

TheHunter, did you notice in session 5, track 2, what sounds like an eq adjustment?

Soon I'll be able to give an assessment of the modded SM-81. The typical mod is to remove the little plastic slotted disc in front of the capsule. It's there to create a small resonant chamber in front of the capsule and make the response curve flat to 20K. By removing the disc, the curve is lowered to -3 dB at 18K, but obviously, removing that resonant chamber improves the phase response of the capsule. Anyway, I'm buying a pair of the modded SM-81s because I'm getting a good deal on them and I'm mainly interested using the bodies with my SM-80 capsules, but I'll try out the modded SM-81s, too. My microphone purchase for the decade... woo hoo!

Cheers,

Otto
