Hi,
As a less experienced audiopile, can someone tell which of these might be better for stage applications. I'm using them for male or female lead vocals.
The Shure SM58 or the AKG D880

Thanks!!!!
Alex

Have you considered the Sennheiser evolution series ie E835 and E845? I did a comparison of the sm58 with the Senns for a female vocalist. She preferred both of them over the sm58 and ended up getting the E845.

yeah, i've got the e835 and it works beautifully... i've even been using it for non-professional recordings as an all-around mic...

The SM 58 is a great live vocal mic which is why it has been more or less the industry standard for decades. My personal preferance between the SM 58 and the AKG 880 is the 58, but then of course YMMV.

Hi There,

I have an AKG D880.

After testing the D880 against various other microphones, including the SM58 and Beta 58, I preferred the D880. It has more presence, with a boost in the 8-15kHz region, as well as a bump in the upper bass. By comparison, I find that the Shures sound dull and lifeless. Gain before feedback on the AKG is better than the Shures, and the handling noise is very low as well.

Oddly enough, I prefer the D880 to the SM57 on snare as well....

The only criticism I have heard is that the D880 won't take the same abuse, so don't use it for carpentry. Grab an SM57 for that!
