It's "perceived" by many folks that things are just now getting better, economically speaking, at least here in Portland. QUOTE]
How's it been since 03'? What are the major industries over there? The value of musical equipment of any kind isn't usually affected by changes in economy except when it comes to inflation. In this case, I would think the rise in the sm57 is most likely driven by the new standards implemented as you stated, along with increased inflation do to growing deficits; personal and national. Any other possibilites?
It's been fairly depressed until recently. Portland is known as "silicon forest", with MANY high-tech businesses in and around PDX. Intel is one of the largest manufacturers in this area, along with a host of others.
The wood industry is all but gone now too, which used to be a huge economic factor in Portland, and throughout the state of Oregon.
It's not just the Shure SM57 that is going up in price... everything related to the MI business is going up. Compare the current Musician's Friend, Sam Ash, Sweetwater, and other vendor catalogs with those of a year ago, and I think you'll see what I mean. The "brick-and-morter" stores are in the same boat, not only the large chains, but the small "mom-n-pop" shops. Some places couldn't make it on "break-even" pricing through the tough times... on the national level, Mars was an unfortunate example. There were many small, local, family-owned shops that couldn't make it either.
Many people feel that the perceived "upturn" in our national economy, along with the manufacturing cost increases brought on my RoHS and the increasing cost of shipping/transportation (due to the increasing cost of oil) are responsible for pushing up the price of MI products.
