Now THATS helpful! .......

They're both great mics for dirty guitar, can you honestly say that you know which will work better for HIS particular application?

I think I can say that the e609 silver is better in all cases for guitar amp, unless you like that 57 presence peak and lack of low end.

On the other hand, the 57 kills the 609 on snare, IMO.

The black sounds flatter and less sparkly... the silver sounds brighter and more guitar-mic like....
I have both. I prefer the silver in most cases.

Yeah...I've had the exact same experience - i guess it goes to show that it's totally a matter of what ya want for the end result. That 57 presence peak with less low end works on alot of guitar stuff i do. I also thought the snare sounded really dull with the e609. But i have recorded guitar tones that benefited from that e609 midrange response, which is really nice. The e609 also made for some interesting backing vocals on a track i recently did.

ok. i just called them. even though the listing is for an "e609" and the mic pictured is the "e609" they are selling the "e609 silver".

Well that would piss me off if I bought one thinking I was getting a black for $99 and then find out it's a different mic all together.

Is it just me or is the 609 a lot more mid-rangey than the 57 is? I heard some clips where is was an identical amp/guitar/riff, and the 609 recording was horrible, whereas the 57 sounded fantastic. Maybe that's personal preference.

My e609 silver is a lot smoother than my 57. The 57 is a lot more mid-rangey, in my experience.

You probably heard the clips in the wrong order. The 609 kills that piece of shit that everyone thinks is great for some insane reason that I'll never understand. Buy one, if you dont like it, I'll trade you my only 57 for it and never look back.

Does anybody have some clips that compare them? I'd really like to hear.

I just went out and picked up two of these for $160. I might have some incredibly unscientific samples in the near future if anybody is interested.

Two silvers for $160? Where at?
I have a black one for sale, too, if you want a totally different flavor to add to those. It can be quite decent on some things.

I went to my local Banjo Center and talked with a friend that works there that I go to for all of my stuff. I tried two for $150 but he couldn't, so $160 it was.

My drummer had a 609 in his kit bag. I was amazed at how light weight it is. Much lighter than an SM57.

E609s

FWIW, I have 4 of these (silver) ....I originally bought a pair for studio toms, and one night I took one out to a live show (just for shits and giggles) to use on my guitar cab...soundcheck came, a couple of the guys were outfront (wireless, you know) and both said "what the f... are you using on your cab!" Sounded exactly like it did on stage, and thathad never happened before, although lots of effort had been spent in that direction. Here's the thing...I've been in the same band for 23 years, same guys for the past 18 years, so I think they were coming from a little experienced place here with regards to guitar sound in this band...I went out, listened...and that was it...bought another pair so I could use three on toms (studio and live) and have one left over for me...the kicker...like the majority out there (live anyway) I was previously using an SM57 all of those years before, and i've never used on since (except on snare, where they really belong for my ear...awesome)... so I'm not shitting on the mic, just it's application (for me)...anyway, the question was this vs. that...I pick this :)

Good luck, no matter what!
