Single overhead drum mic?

hungovermorning

Dr. Caveman.
So I kind of like the idea of a single overhead microphone on a well tuned set in the sweet spot of the room. Any suggestions for $100-300 for this. Any certain patterns that are better for it. It's being captured on an analog set up and extreme clarity is not what I'm going for. Just the overall sound of the drums, a very 60's English approach if you will.

I use a Blue Baby Bottle for mono overhead all the time with good results. I think the pattern would depend on what your room sounds like.

It's a live room, but it's not jumpy. Mmm, mono drums. Thanks for your advice hangdog. Anyone else into mono drums?

yeah i only use one overhead ... buts thats mostly a budget problem but yeah my results arent bad at all i just use a free mic i got with my 1804 the MXL .. i think it is a MXL 2001 .. actually not too bad

perhaps an omni or a figure 8?? omni for more room sound, figure 8 to place in the middle of the drumset and pickup both sides, but it'd still be in mono.

just an idea.

Mono totally doesn't phase me. I already mix the pair of small condensors into one track anyway. Might as well just get something fairly nice, find the sweet spot while not worrying about phasing and gor for it.

my favorite mic for mono overheads or just overheads in general in that price range is AT4033s.

Might be able to get two anyway.

Doesn't sound bad at all Herm, nice 388 by the way. Any other suggestions? I would've assumed a large diaphram condensor would work the best for that.

Actually with a single overhead you are looking at having to pick up everything from the toms to the cymbals so I would look at something with a broad and flat response. The decision to use an omni or a cardioid capsule would depend on whether I could get high enough to have everything essentially on-axis.

I was going to say 4033 as well. I am thinking SDC because of the better transient response.

yeah, a lot of the decisions I make are based on whether or not I could get high enough.

CAD M179 = very good choice for this (and tons of other stuff).
