Its not that you shouldn't be trying to get everything to sound good as you go along, but getting the mix buss compression "just right" and not wanting to change it as you add more instruments will probably be counterproductive. The mix buss shouldn't sound bad without the buss compression anyway.

Yeah I agree. I don't have mix bus compression when mixing.. Now my project is around -6db without anything on the output channel. I think it will sound good at the end after all :)

I used iZotope Alloy 2 which is NOT a mastering plugin. I used this on several tracks and this contributed to taking up alot of space.

If you're using it on tracks and not on the main bus then I go back to my earlier point, track volumes shouldn't affect compressors inserted on the track. It should have been as simple as turning all the faders down a few dB.

Yeah I did and it worked, except the few I've got bussed but I sorted them out aswell :) Thanks

It's best practice to record peaks around -12 to -18. If you find it too soft, turn up your monitors.

Cheers :)
:thumbs up:, and in the same stroke mix at these levels!! Why these levels are good for recording but not for mixing is far from me

You have to mix at conservative levels to begin with... I always avoid my master fader going past -6 if at all possible. Usually it hovers around -10 or lower.
Gospel
There is no sound quality difference between a sound that is barely audible and one that is just below clipping, except the volume level.
Most misconceived thoughts about sound... Say that again sir please!
