i am looking at a rack mounted four channel compressor, the shure voicegate it looks like late sixties early seventies vintage. each channel is a seprate unit that has xlr in and out. i cant find much info on the piece of equipment. any experiences or knowledge would be appreciated.

As I recall, the Voicegate was just a gate and was designed for noisy environments. It mainly was used in conjunction with conference room PA's. I wouldn't bank on it being all that useful for recording.

Take a look at the dbx 1046. It retails around $425 but I'm sure you could find it used somewhere.
