shure sm-57?

im considering buying a 57. my heavy guitar tones sound horrible, and i think its largely due to the mic im using. ive tried everything else on this site as far as mike placement, lessening gain, etc etc. right now im using an audio technica which looks a lot like a 57, im not sure of its exact model but i know its a cheaper one.

Anyway, im wondering if itd be worth the $80 investment. how much would it actually help my tone?

Having an SM57 is always a good thing... I have no idea how much it can improve your sound. Just make sure to experiment a lot with micplacement as it makse a huge difference.

perhaps messing around with the amp sounds, and finding a sound that sounds closer to what your after its been recorded, ie; set the amp sound for recording, don't worry about the "live sound" just concern yourself with the sound as it appears on the tape/ harddisk.....

I agree with the good DR above.

Often the sound you like live and the one that sounds good recorded are two entirely different things. A lot of times it's in the lows/lowmids....what sound super fat standing in front of it may well be muddy, grindy crap through a mic.

Sometimes it's also better to turn down a bit and really try to hear what the mic hears down by the speaker. Put on some head phones, play a chord, move the mic to get close, tweak a knob or two and repeat.

BTW, I personally think a 57 would be a big step in the right direction but I don't want to be one of those guys that says ANY peice of gear is the be all end all solution....it's all about technique and experimentation. IMHO, if a guy can't figure out how to make a Mackie sound reasonably good, a Neve will not make him a world class engineer.
