Just curious....for shoe-string home recording is the Shure PG series (57 and 58) a good budget comprimise for the usual SM series?

Very limited budget, for tinkering and "song sketching."

Bottom line, will even the PG series be much better than the $10 Nady from Target I'm using now?

Yes, the PG will be better than the $10 Nady. I personally think that it's worth it to save just a little bit longer and grab the SM version, but just for sketching a PG would do alright.
