Should I fix vintage speakers for my studio?

I have a small recording studio and I like to mess around. I bought a
M-Audio Fast Track Pro and have a Roland A-30, a sterling audio
ST-51 mic, a pair of KRK Rokit 5's, Ultrasone HFI-450 headset, and
a Berringer 1202FX board. Everything is just sitting to the right of my
computer desk on another computer desk and is easy to reach.

I have a matched pair of JBL 4311 WX speakers that I paid 400 dollars for
EACH back in 1973-74 while stationed in Germany. I was told they were selling
for double that back in the states, but I dont know. 800 just for speakers back in
73-74 must be like spending 4k today !!!!!!

Anyway, the two tweeters and mid range are blown and old looking as I took them out 20 years ago and they were in a box. Re-coning seems to be over 100 a speaker or more. The LE25 and LE5-2 speakers sure have heavy magnets. The both woofers are in really good shape and the cabs are not too bad either. The front covers are falling apart, not the black cloth, the "web" that holds it to speakers.

What to do? I see the speakers on ebay for 100 a set, so to spend 200 bucks
and have my speakers back, will it be worth it for my recordings? The small
KRK speakers sure are fine, and they were only 150 each.

If I part out the speakers, I think I will just hate doing that, but I guess I would just
look up what others are asking on ebay.

Someone broke into my apartment and stole everything but the speakers and turntable. I had a marantz 40 watt back in the day and it ran my jbl's really nice.

OH well, thanks for your advice !

If it were me and I had the funds, I would probably try to fix them just because I love vintage hifi gear. That said, it doesn't sound very cost-effective unless you're sure their market value is more than what you put into them.

4311's were great back in the day... i would consider getting them fixed but not very cost effective i know... one of mt current projects is to build some monitors based on 4430 's ... ive got the butt horns .... and electronic Xover and amps to drive them (plus subs) need to run into good deal on 2225's and 2425's...

I swear, I responded to this post. But it's not here. Strange.

Short answer: yeah, recone them. Worth it.
