Cardiod, the SM57 and 545 share the same Unidyne III capsule, but they have some different parts. The 545 is NOT an inferior '57.

It came out around 1959, and the SM57 in 1966. The 545's can be a little more sensitive to
handling, whereas the SM57 has a built-in shock mount to counter this.
(my Shure 546 has this shockmounting)

The "Made In USA" 545's and SM57's are known
tend to have better high and low end response,
plus closer tolerances to one another vs. the ones later made in Mexico.

The secret of how these microphones can sound terrific is the placement/EQing of the Unidyne III capsule, which is also the heart of the mighty SM7.

Good info Chessparov.

I've got one of the "made in USA" 545's; do you know why the grill/top is sealed (i.e. fixed) on this model, but swivels around on the modern 57? Does that have anything to do with the sound differences, or is just a cosmetic difference?

new here just thought I would give this a stab, but whatever happened to matching the mic to the source? I have a 57 actually plan on buying a 609 tomorrow not because I think its better but because its different and would give me more tonal options. I would imagine that different mics sound better/more desirable based on what guitar and amp your using, the same way different guitars sound better when paired with certain amps, or different singers sound better with certain microphones. Also I would think that the song your recording makes a huge difference in the tone that your after, which would affect your mic choice and placement. I don't like recording clean tone with dynamic mics, and I happen to think that a AKG C 535 condenser sounds awesome on distorted electric guitar. This is my personal taste, and you can debate which mic is better all day long, but at the end of all your debating both the 57 and the 609 are being used to make excellent recordings, buy one of each and fool around with the placement, chances are you will find you like them for different things, maybe one may sound better on a different amp or for a different style of music, and if you decide that you dont like either of them you can always sell one, 57s have a pretty high resale, as do 609s
