I recently downloaded this free spectrum analyzer that seems to work well (it's a VST plug-in) http://www.elementalaudio.com/products/inspector/index.html

A step up would be http://www.brainspawn.com/products/SpectR-Pro/ but it costs around $55

But could it be what I think might be known as the "Allison effect" ?

That a standing wave is being created which is cancelling certain frequencies AT the source?

Since these frequencies are absent, you are overcompensating on the EQ???
