I ran into a rep for a northwest label yesterday who says she pays $500 to $1000 for a beat. Should I go for this, or would I be stupid to let my best beats go for a few hundred dollars? If I wanted to keep the copyright or negotiate a royalty based payment, how would I do it?

Copyright any and every beat you produce so in this way you retain the rights to your "song"! If she is willing to pay 500-1000 for your work, just imagine how much SHE is gonna' get paid!
TAXI is a great organization for copyrighting any materials for artists. I think the fee is $230 a year. If that's to steep, than simply mail a copy of your beatz to yourself!
Good Luck !
Now go out and get paaaaaiidddd!!!

True words....BUT: Is mailing it to yourself actually useful in protecting a copyright, though? Is taxi any better than the LOC? What about ASCAP?

Anymore advice about royalties?

Both ASCAP and LOC charge much higher fees than TAXI .

As far as mailing your material to yourself, naturally use certified mail!

Also checkout www.aandronline.com for mo' info!
An online copyrighting service.

As far as royalties to your songs, basically I would recommend
home-girl pay for the USE of your beatz while you retain the RIGHTs to your songs as future royalties and payments derived from use of same for commercials, videos, movies, documentaries
etc. but basically that's a long stretch

However if you can determine how your beatz will be used and how much it's worth to her perhaps you can negotiate a higher
cheddar disbursement from her, but the decision is all yours!

Thanks for the link, Gec. I remember the thread, and was looking for it, but the search function was down on the day I posted my topic.

MISTERQCUE, Thanks for all the info. The situation is a little trickier than straight royalties. Turns out this lady is a manager for unsigned groups. What she does is get groups the attention they need to get a major record deal. She doesn't charge the group anything, but she takes 20 % of any signing bonus they may get. She wants to record a single for promotional use--not for sales. With this in view, I would be stupid to ask for royalties; there will be none. What do you think would be a reasonable fee for this application, assuming I retained the rights to my material?

Thanks again.
