Second set of SDC's

I'm going to get a second set of SDCs. I have a set of b5's that I got because they were cheap, easy to get hold of and I needed some half decent mics for an accoustic recording session at the Gaol. They have a nice accurate sound and I'm very pleased with them especial on woodwind instruments but on cheap guitars they can be a bit dull (sorry if I mislead anyone with any of my previous posts, I hadn't really gotten to know the mics properly yet and as ppl pointed out, all I had to compare with in the way of SDCs were ecm8000s ). I'm looking for something that can add a bit of "shine" to cheap guitars.
At first I was thinking MXL 603s but then I saw the Joe Meek JM27. They don't look too bad. Has anyone got a JM27 or two.
With no disrespect I'd appreciate it if Alan Hyatt did not comment because I don't want DJL and the spam police to get upset. I just want real feedback on how they sound, not info on what components they are made of, what factory they are made in or any of that rubbish

EDIT: Also I was thinking Oktava MK012 but I can't get my hands on any. Anybody that could offer any assistance to an Aussie in need speak now

i haven't used any of the mxl's or joemeek's but i'm very happy with my superlux's. i got a stereo matched pair with individual frequency response curves(noted with serial numbers) for around 200. i think the price went up to $230 now but they are still really good mics. i don't know about having them make cheap guitars sound good though. if a cheap guitar sounds cheap now i don't think microphones can help extensively. i've gotten some really good sounds from my superlux's using the one over the shoulder and the other toward the fretboard. but then again i'm mic'ing my taylor and martin. i would recommend these mics though. i like them a lot. you can also get them with interchangable capsules. so then you would have cardiod, hypercardiod and omnidirectional capsules.

I'll put in a word for the MXL 603s's. I use them and am very pleased with the results. I got used for $150 for the stereo matched pair. Don't know how much that helps you since I'm in the US, but I like them.

I might go with that instinct. The 603's do a great job of adding a little extra shine to dull cymbals or old strings, etc.

I'd also try a decent large-diaphragm vocal condenser that has some of the 12K bump goin' on. Most of the Chinese stuff; Studio Projects, Marshall, etc. would fit that bill, as would the Rode stuff (NTK, NT1000, NT-2, etc.).

Its funny what because your review at mojo pie gave me that instinct. I was giving what you said about LDCs a thought and I think I've nailed it down to 3 choices. Get either a pair of 603s, a second V67g or a second SP B3.
Maybe I should do all 3 but what should be my #1 priority?

I just got a pair of MXL 603sPR (matched pair in case w/ shockmounts) from ebay from a seller called ar-online (I normally don't plug sellers but this one was very accomodating and good to deal with) for 200USD. They are fantastic, best acoustic guitar sound I've been able to get so far. It's night and day compared to the audix F15's and oktava mk319 I was using before, sooo much more detail and better transient response.

I have a really nice acoustic guitar, too, though. That might make quite a bit of difference. Bought it back when I was foolish with how I spent money (well, more foolish than I am now, haha). Thanks for the compliment, though. I used an x/y stereo mic'ing technique with them, bout 6 to 10 inches away from the guitar.

I'll bet those 012's will work out just fine for you. I hear they are pretty nice.

No offense, but better mics are just going to make cheap stuff sound even cheaper.

This seems to be a very common misconception on the internet. No amount of good recording equipment will make crappy instruments sound good.

A "crappy" mic, when used properly, will make a good guitar sound better than a good mic on a crappy guitar.

Sorry, that might not have been what you meant at all, but that's the way it came across to me, and a ton of other people give me the same impression.

If you really want new mics, I would get the 603s. They're supposed to be darned good on acoustic guitar, and they're the typical hyped high end deal. That's basically perfect for what you were asking.
