Here's my dilemma. I'm trying to figure out how to get my dad's keyboard to go to my Mac. It is a Roland Fantom S.

The back of it has a USB, but it does not look like a USB. I've seen that kind of connection before, I just don't know where. The back of my Firestudio has a MIDI - S/PDIF. I guess my question is, what do I need to do or get to connect my Roland Fantom-S straight to my mac or through my Firestudio to my mac. And if both are possible, which is better for me to do? Thanks.

EDIT: Of course the Fantom also has MIDI's. and my Firestudio has 1394's.

If you just want to record the Audio connect it just like any other instrument (via 1/4" TRS cables). If you want to record the MIDI data connect it with MIDI.

I'm not sure how this helps me Tetra. My whole dilemma was not knowing how to connect any of it.

OK.

Step #1: Download latest drivers for the FireStudio and install them.
Step #2: Connect the firestudio with firewire cable.
Step #3: Open the recording program you're using (the FS probably came with Cubase LE or the Presonus StudioOne)
Step #4: Set up the FireStudio in the recording software. In Cubase it's in the Device set up window. You need to select it as the ASIO driver. Then set up the inputs in the VST connections window.
Step #5: Connect the keyboard to the firestudio with either a 1/4" ts or 1/4" trs cable. Everything you were Afraid to Ask about Cables

This is for recording audio. MIDI is a completely different beast, it's data. It records what note, the duration and velocity. So if you record MIDI you could be playing piano on the keyboard and play it back as violin.

Without writing a complete book this should get you going so you can at least ask a more specific question.

That's what I'm trying to do is record MIDI. But I don't know how to connect the keyboard to either the Firestudio or my macbook pro.

The Presonus is connected via firewire.

Connect the keyboard to the MIDI port on the presonus. You must need an adapter cable. With MIDI the OUT goes to the IN and the IN goes to the OUT.

Then create a MIDI track, click on record and play something. It should record.
