So I'm looking for a preamp for a Rode K2 mic. I'm hopefully looking to spend less than $500. I really know very little about preamps, so any guidance would be very much appreciated.

- Is less than $500 fesable for a decent preamp?
- Do I need a specific sound card for my computer to use it?
- Does the mic cable make a significant difference?

What kind of gear do you have now? It kinda sounds like you have nothing but a mic?

Well right now I have an AT3035 with US-122 usb interface. I actually don't have the K2 yet, but that's the one I'm lookin to get.

Basically, I'm looking for an upgrade from my AT3035 & US-122 to a K2, some decent preamp, and whatever else I need (soundcards, better cables, etc.)

I used to have the US-122, and putting a preamp in the signal chain is ok. Any preamps better that the ones in there would be better. Cables make a difference, but if you dont have the cash..its ok to get regular cables...look for the "best cheap mic pre" poll or something...its somewhere on the forum..im sure it will have loads of info to find a preamp on a budget.
