Functionally obsessed.
This is kind of rare for me, but I want to post a late night, "I've had some drinks" post on the Analog Only forum.

Captain Beefheart, aka Don Van Vliet, died at the age of 69 yesterday.

A number of groups, acts, and artists inspired me to be myself and push hard. I'm not one to worship idols, but Don Van Vliet's seemingly inexhaustible fearlessness pushed me REALLY hard to be EXACTLY who I want to be. I want to kiss his boots and I also know that he would've hated this gesture at the same time.... Dear sir, I bid you adieu. I'll see you in the next life, and thank you SO much for what you've given me in this life. You are missed, and you are revered.

That's all I have to say.

Couldn't agree more.
One of the most original artists ever.
And I don't use the phrase " artist" often.
He had a fearless way of just trusting his instincts.
His music required more initial effort but was ultimately more rewarding.
Not a good fit for the shallow, shiny world of pop music.
Hard to believe his stuff was released on a mainstream record label and he toured the top
Venues of the day.
I think even now, his stuff is way over most people's heads.
And even after 40 years of being drowned in the now cliched sounds of electric guitar and drums, it still sounds just as unique today as when it was made.

You're damn right ! Truth be told, the Cap'n wasn't interested in being accessible, even back in the 60s.
However, for me, his classic contribution to 20th century art was the incredible album cover of "Trout mask replica" {and a great title}. I'd have that as a picture on my wall !

Burned into my brain forever.....

The moon looks like a crocodile it's red wings feeding on lice....

I knew she was under duress
I knew her under her dress

Her eyes are a blue million miles

The dust blows forward
And the dust blows back

"...that's right, the mascara snake, fast and bulbous. also a tinned teardrop. "
