Greetings acoustic experts,
I'm building a small studio (24x11x8) and control room (6x11x8) in the extension part of my garage. Yes I know it's tiny, but it was this or nothing. I used numerous sound transmission control techniques so I won't wake the neighbors. I'm almost done with tape and float, so I'm thinking about inside acoustic treatment. I've done some reading (enough to be dangerous) and think I'll have to deaden the room (with bass traps, etc) to get decent recording since the studio is so small. I'm thinking of using Fibrex (www.fibrexinsulations.com) mineral wool (covered with burlap or other cheap fabric) for deadening since it's quite a bit cheaper than any fiberglass I've found. This stuff seems to have pretty decent specs (http://www.fibrexinsulations.com/pdf/IndustrialBoard.pdf). It comes in 4, 6, and 8 lb weights.
So now for my question. Is there any inherent advantage or disadvantage in using different weights? According to the spec sheet, even the 4 lb has a respectable NRC. There's only a slight difference in cost between the different weights at a given thickness so I just want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious before ordering. In a nutshell, is heavier better or not? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
