Hey guys, I am looking for that deep metal tom sound to get those kits sounding huge!! I am going to put G2 Clear on my Yamaha Stage Custom, right now i have G2 coated, but i want a different sound. MY real question lies in the resonant side of the toms. Should the Heads be thicker or thinner on the bottom. I heard a lot of peple use G1, whuch are 1 ply, but a lot of people use genera resonant, which are thinner than the g1. How can i get that huge pantera, megadeth, slayer, metallica Big heavy ass drum sound?

Thanka in advance

P.S. I am also considering EC2, i heard some good things about them.

If you want the Pantera/Metallica sound, you need to buy a trigger for your kick drum and toms. Vinnie and Lars both use triggers...ever wonder why Vinnies kick and toms always sound awesome live (and the same on every album)? Some people say it's cheating to use them, but if you can play the stuff anyways, I don't see any harm in using them to perfect your tone. To get that sound acoustically I think you would need some serious mics but that is just my opinion. Good luck!

I'd suggest do away with the Evans and get Remo. A lot of folk around here will disagree, but they're fatter than Evans with a better stick response. As for the thickness, I havn't really experimented enough to critically comment tbh.

To get that short fat drum sound from Metallica and Pantera, you should go with a 2-ply head with muffling on top. Go for a set of Pinstripes, Powerstroke 4's, or EC2's. I'd go clear for extra attack. On the bottom, I'd do Ambassadors or G1's. Some people like Ebony Ambassadors which are a little darker and have less sustain.

The kicker is you want a fat tone (2-ply) which is short and without a lot of ring (muffling on the top head and darker/heavier resonant heads).

You won't be able to dupe the sound but you'll get closer.

I completely disagree. I'd advise the OP to try out different brands if finances allow, but I've wanted to get that deep tom sound and clear heads, G2s, have always been good to me. Pins will get more of a deeper "thud" with less resonance if tuned low, but Evans heads hold up much better for me, and for a few other thrash/hardcore drummers I know who beat the ever loving piss out of their kits :-)

Thinner heads are louder than the heavier 2 ply heads

cool guys, thanx alot for the responses. I am looking towards the g2s at the moment. I will eventually try different combos, such as emperor and ambassador, ec2 and genera resonate, g2s and g1. Ya i wouldnt want to trigger my kit because i record all styles, and i like the realness, i just want some fat tones! Thanks for your help you guys, good luck.
