recording XLR mic and laptop audio simultaneously on marantx PMD661

Hi,

I am trying to record XLR mic and laptop audio on a Marantz PMD661 but have not been successful. To record the laptop audio, I am using a mini-to-mini cable going from the laptop's headphone jack to the LINE IN2 in the Marantz. But with no success. I would appreciate any advice on what I need to do to record these two channels.

What is the problem? Hums, buzzes, crackles, whines or just poor quality or hiss? Some laptops like macs have pretty decent output audio, but many computers have big issues with recording from the headphones output, Dells in particular have dreadful power supply design and are a real problem, but work better running on the battery power.

The proper solution is an external device which has been designed to give you quality audio in and out. Let us have more info.

The 661 only records two tracks -- You can either use the built-in mics, or the XLR inputs, or the mini.
