I'm going to record some youngsters (10-12) using either a pair of 603s or B1s. I've pretty much figured out all my problems until I started thinking about potential delay issues.
Here is the setup:

XY 603s (B1s) - > soundcraft fx16 -> Delta1010 -> CoolEdit Pro.

The soundtrack is gonna' be imported into CEP and then played back while I record the kids. Two yamaha monitors, out of phase, facing the kids about 15 feet away. The more I thought about this I started thinking there could be a ever-so-slight delay between the recorded soundtrack and the vocals.

What do you guys think? If it's a problem can I just add a slight delay to the original soundtrack afterwards to compensate or is this something I should try and fix beforehand. Do you think it will even be a problem?

Thanks
Dennis

Use the monitor mixer in the delta control panel so that the monitor mix is routed {bypassing the conversion} straight out of the card to monitors. This will eliminate delay. Also would be a good idea to have them wear headphones when tracking there vocals so the audio playback isn't recorded in with the vocal track.

:cool: If the room is not too lively, it should not be tto big a problem, the main concern is the mics picking up the monitors, most groups like this every one uses headphones.
I would give it a good effort/try.

muttley,

i think dennis is planning on cancelling out the monitor signal

If the kids are actually tight enough that you notice any delay I would be surprised. It wouldn't be too hard to slide the tracks to line up but since you are doing live monitors that could cause some serious phase issues.

Your real problem is that the out of phase monitor trick only works when you are using a mono mic and only if the mic is receiving direct sound and not a lot of ambient reflections.

Thanks guys. I'm just gonna' try this and see what happens. She had her last recording done by a "pro" and it sounded like total crap. I know I can do better than that (I Hope)

Headphones for all the kids isn't really an option at this point. If it works out I might fork out the cash for headphone amps and cans but I don't want to do this and then get fudged.

Thanks for the advice and I'll let ya'll know how it went.

Dennis
