Through Amp or DI with pedal or DI Clean with plug ins?

I have used all nd got decent effects with all, but all of them present their own problems

could some people show me how they record distorted guitar with somewhere I could listen to it (eg myspace)

I have recorded using a condenser and SM57 about 4 inches away from the grill of an amp and i tent to find the sound is alot rougher, more powerfull but harder to work with.

Recording DI with a pedal Tends to have a lack of power but a cleaner sound but slight farting noise when I palm mute.

DI clean tends to give a terrible farting noise when I palm mute and I need multiple plug ins to get anywhere near the sound I want (I only use free plug ins)

any advise?

You'll get a number of suggestions for different techniques all with slightly different to vastly different results. Heres a few of mine. If your using the 57 and the condenser at the same time, be sure to check for phase issues. Mic placement will affect the sound. Dead center will give you a brighter sound but also a bit harsher. Moving off center an inch or two will soften and round the tone out. Try the mic at a 45 degree angle. I like the sound of the mic right up on the grill but thats just my taste. One rule I've found thats consistent is to back the gain way off. Overdrive translates very differently recorded. A small amount will sound much more distorted than live. For me, theres no comparison to a well miced amp with good gain staging in the chain.

Slippermans Recording Distorted Guitars from Hell

This link is a must read for anyone seriously trying to record distorted guitars. GREAT information in there.

Try and get the right sound with an amp. I've had more luck going through amps than emulators. Pushing real air around sounds good! :)

Hope you get something going that works for you!

What type of distorted tone are you after? Metal? Rock? Blues? ...

What's your amp?

Speaker(s)?

I put the mic at a 45 degree angle right up against the grill and turn the gain down a bit from what you usually play at and crank up the Volume so you get a good speaker breakup , then use plugins and such to adjust the tone.....

My amp also has two DI outputs (one post eq and one pre eq post preamp and a DI Input that is pre eq) so I can record 3 of the same guitar tracks at once (one miced and 2 DI all with a different tone) and with those I can get a pretty good tone recorded......

Cheers

Hello.

I have very little recording experience but I have the same objectives: to record loud and clear guitar distortion (with a low budget).

Please check the post I recently made about the same subject:

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=292112

Also check this very good video about your subject:

Also, I have sent you a private message, please read it so I can send you my samples.

Cheers.

Do yourself a really big favor and record a safety (dry) track so that if you fall short in the mix later on you can either re-amp the dry signal through another rig or use some plugins to give your tracks the glimmer they require!
