A 700mhz celeron will choke on 16 inputs. 550mhz will almost be useless. You need a lot more power to get a decent track count with plugins

Okay then, if I really need to, I'll put the Delta card(s) into my main machine (Athlon XP 2600+). Although, I really would rather not use my main machine... I just realized I also can get a faster Dell machine (somewhere around 1 GHZ or more).

for what your intending confusitron i would set up a dedicated athlon daw
(at least a 2 ghz processor). i would go white box instead of brand name. brand names sometimes do custom stuff to the internals of PC's.
whereas white boxes are "open".
if you want to go whole hog check around on the net what some folks are getting performance wise with AMD64 processors and new drive technologies. i would also ask maudio if there are any issues running 3
delta sound cards all recording concurrently. prolly not but best to check.
or if you want to go this route you might want to also talk to/email
rme and lynx which offer some interesting solutions for multiple inputs and which a lot of pro's like.
a cheaper alternative is the 4 input maya mk2(tracertek.com 100 bucks).
you might ask tracertek about the possibility of running multiple mayas.
the maya is very new so i dont know much wheareas delta is used by lots of folks.
you can CERTAINLY record multiple channels "live" PROVIDING
you have the computer power to do it like an athlon for example with FAST HARD DRIVES.
