Really lost on home recording distortion...tried almost everything

that's what i was sort of getting at...if he isn't close to stef's tone after buying his guitar, preamp, or power amp, then it's not gonna happen

and i can't guarantee that's what carpenter used on bloody cape, but he's used that setup in the past when, IMO, the deftones sounded a lot better than they do now

If you are very careful, and take the time to actually tweak it, a lot of amp sims can come very close.

The problem is that a lot of people will plug the guitar into an interface and record it DI. Most commerically produced albums are mic'd amps. You can't really get that if you DI. There will undoubtedly be someone chime in that you can, and it's a never ending battle over which sounds better, which is more real (someone actually used the word organic to describe it). Bottom line, if you want to comp a tone and you don't have the same gear as the one you are trying to emulate, you will have to work at it.

Most consumer based audio apps are the same. It's a simple formula: more expensive means higher quality.

I don't think you will be too disappointed with what you have. Some really brilliant recordings have been done on far less.

im mostly a lurker in here....but i love posting about guitar recording.....cause im sooooooo always trying new things.....

but i think everyone has coverd/posted the 'tried and true" methods to recording heavy guitar.....

-less gain, more amp volume
-more mids, less scooping
-mic it, dont emulate it
-get rid of any stomp boxes /rack gear that you wont use during that recording. your sucking tone with more cable runs that are not neccessary,...
-try using 2 dynamic mics (if you have 2) and place both upclose to the grill, one pointed on the center of the cone (not the dustcap, which is that lil' round dome in the middle of the speaker). take the second one (on a different speaker) and place it in the same spot....but angle it so its now pointing torward the dustcap).....i love this technique!
-add some post EQ......most of the time, people complain about their guitar still sounds muddy or muffled....and not pro sounding. Add some 8k in there to brighten it back up (even if you add up to 6-10db of 8k, do what it takes to brighten it up and fit in the mix)
