re20 vs. re27n/d

The RE27 supposedly has a little hotter output and perhaps a more detailed treble response. Some folks like it better and others prefer the RE20.

What would you be using it for?

i'd probably try it on anything. i've already got a lot of mics that i'm happy with, but it seems like the re20 is somewhat of a standard to have in the closet. i'd mostly be interested in it's sound on vocals. i have an sm7 dynamic too, and don't want to buy it if it's just going to be covering the same territory twice.

Other than possibly being better on kick drum & bass cabinets (YMMV), I don't know what the RE20 would be adding. I have one and like it a lot, but I've never compared it to the SM7. Those who have tend to say the SM7 wins out for most voices (on singing tasks), though it could be different with any given voice. Like the SM7, it requires a preamp with lots of quiet gain. I think the RE27 runs a little hotter due to the ND magnet.

what's the difference?

keep in mind i havn't used a re20 in about 3 years....
but i just got an re27/nd

here's it so far
bass cab-love it (sugested)
kick-ok, but it won't be replaceing my b52
git cabs-kick ass
-------stipulation---------
i have been useing it almost strictly with the HIGH-CUT switch ON

it has the "boxy" mid charcter i remember from the re-20
if i remember correctly (and i may not, 3 years and all) i think i'd rather the re-20 on voice. (maby a touch warmer????)

take that for what it's worth

I bought my RE27 from a commercial radio station. They had a mix of RE20/RE27 and did not like the difference in sound. They went entirely back to RE20.

I suspect my RE27 are a bit brighter than the RE20, and also higher output.

Mine do the job for me just fine: live performance micing.
