Ok, I was just making sure I was reading into this right.
Because if a pad decreases the output of the mic, in turn it also decreases the signal-to-noise ratio. Which in this case is exactly opposite the desired result... Correct?

A pad doesn't decrease signal to noise ratio (as far as I know) - all it does is reduce the level of a signal. The inherent SNR of the mixer, the mic, the preamp, etc., respectively don't change. If you turn on a 10dB pad that sits on the mixer before the built-in preamp, you'll have to turn the gain up higher on the mixer to get the same final level, which, since the mic's internal SNR doesn't change, will appear once you crank the gain higher to compensate for what was lost due the pad. *breathes*.

I don't think he has a thorough enough understanding of compressors to sidechain one into a parametric EQ for de-essing purposes. According to his post above, the thing has an expander built in. I've never personally used an expander - didn't even know what they were - apparently it acts as sort of a reverse-compressor, taking signals BELOW a particular threshold, and decreasing them by the ratio set on the unit.
I can see how that would help with background noise, since during quiet passages (i.e. passages that fall below a certain dB level), the signal is attenuated by a certain degree, rather than just playing at normal volume.
As for the original poster's problem... could you possibly try recording without the compressor/expander, and then try noise reduction in software? wavearts has some very nice hum/hiss removal tools that you can try free for 30 days, I think it is.
Of course, if you were to even think of buying any of the wavearts plugs after that, I would tell you to spend the money on a better mic and pre, instead of investing good money in bandaids for something that can be fixed with wise spending on a few key things (like mic and preamp).

Exactly my point. If you leave the noise floor at a constant AND attenuate the wanted signal, then naturally the SNR will decrease.

Well... you mean the noise floor of the resultant track is lower... each of those pieces of equipments' respective SNR don't change

LOL my problem isnt hiss lol i just said i use comressors expander to get rid of any unwanted some MY PROBLEM IS that wen i use dyanmic processing within cool edit pro, most ppl say i shud use 4:1 very fast attack BUT my vocals take a drastic change as they are all evened out. they become very dull and so. i was hoping if someone could tell me hoe 2 maintain that sound after compression. i have access to waves and izotopez, any1 know any settingsSorry no advice.

9 out of 10 rapists agree, shure makes the best mic for rape, the sm58. It's rock solid and could knock out, and incapacitate your victim with one blow to the head, then, after you've violated, beat up, or murdered your victim, you can take it back to the studio, and it will work just like it always did, without any dents and scratches....beautiful thing, the sm58.

I just thought of it... also, the sm58 has a perfect shape for use in raping...tapered. so as to retain the illusion of a gentleman, with a ball at the end, to act as a guide as to how far to shove it in, so as to not get it lodged up in there without chance of retrieving it to record that jazz trio in the studio later in the evening... Extreme Elvis and GG Allin used this as their mic of choice for anal insertion. . .oh ummm oh wait...that went too far didn't it? lol
