raising bass bridge height to reduce fret noise

i'm a guitarist who decided to learn to play the bass as well. i'd already mastered the art of being a fake keyboardist, so i figured i could be a fake bassist too. thing is, i start out being a fake and then i get interested in learning to do it right.

when i first started playing i couldn't make the notes stick, so i lowered the bridge. it increased the fret noise and meant that i got more wood, and fret in my sound, but i wasn't recording anyway. now, i'm starting to record on bass as well as guitar, and i want to raise the bridge back where it was... only i don't know where it was.

is there a recommended setting? is there a web page that deals with bass intonation?

Sounds like an opportunity for some trial and error.

Move it, see if you like it, if not move it some more, etc. Once you get it where the sound and feel is what you want, re-do the intonation to make it play perfectly in tune.

Do a search here for intonation - there was a great thread a few months ago.

came out OK

i raised the bridge and did the intonation last night, and it came out OK. i don't know if there is some 'magic' bridge height that i should have set it too, but it sounds good.

The bridge height is going to be dependent on a number of other factors surely? e.g. neck relief, nut height, string gauge, etc...

therefore its going to be unique to the individual instrument.

I second the trial and error approach.... I dont think anyone could give you exact numbers for the ideal bridge height even if all the other factors were constants as its gonna be dependent on your playing style just how high you need(want) it to be.....
