Question for A Reel Person et al

I've noticed that a lot of these reel-to-reel tape decks only accpet rca inputs. I've got nice preamps with XLR and TRS outs that I'd like to use. Can I just go into the deck via a XLR to RCA and/or TRS to RCA cable or are there some other issues I need to be aware/worry about? Thanks

There are two issues. Connector configuration and line levels.

XLR/TRS balanced outputs and unbalanced RCA inputs are not directly compatible.

All the RCA line inputs would require -10dbV line level. There's may be a switchable level output on your preamp.

There are balanced-to-unbalanced conversion boxes that simultaneously convert plug type and line levels between +4/XLR & -10/RCA. The ones I'm familiar with are the Tascam LA-40, LA-80/81 (pair), and the Fostex 5030.

Check your preamp specs too.

the DMP3 does xlr balanced at +4 dBu and ts unbalanced at -10 dBv

Perhaps your pre has the same feature.
 
I use a patchbay to go from my balanced pres to my unbalanced reel (and from my unbalanced reel to my balanced mixer) and never had a problem. maybe there's something I don't know?
 
Thanks. I've got a couple of Grace 101's preamps. They sound pretty good to me. Each has an XLR and TRS out. You CAN go out of it via an unbalanced TS cable, and I'm guessing I can use a TS to RCA cable, but the instructions to the Grace pre advises against using an unbalanced out b/c of "distortion" to the out signal.

I could just get a mixer. I had a Mackie 1202 VLZ pro, which I liked and sold....oh well.
