Question:do you consider yourself an artist,and,if so ...

does that mean you have the right to criticize,not critique,another "artists" work . Reason i ask is i got into a discussion about letters in guitar mags where the people just trash other artists ,i.e. letters to the editors, ....my opinion is if you want to be respected as an "artist" i think you should be respectful of other "artists" example ; "I like what he's saying but it's not what i listen to " ......example to the other side "he's a no talent loser he sucks at life he'll never be the artist i am".... maybe it's just me ,but, if you pour your life into your work and it becomes your "art " if it only touches a small segment of people is it any less art than a person who for whatever reason touches millions,i think not ...

Music is about harmony and that means all parts should complement all others. I think this should apply to the musicians too. I do not have to like all styles but I do appreciate and respect good music, no matter what the style or who is doing it.

I think of myself as a artist not in the way of being able to play guitar but in the craft of building guitars. I have got a chance to play and very throughly inspect other Luthiers work right up next to mine. I can find flaws in EVERY guitar I have ever picked up. Not beacause they are bad but beacause I know where to look and I have the eye for that kind of detail. I can find the same flaws in my own work. That said I would never bash another Luthiers work. bottom lin is that he/she put a lot of work and time into the guitar and poured themselves into it, and the desreve to be congratualted for that. I've had guys show me thier first guitars and they are hidieous compared to what the industry standard is but I try to look past all that and see the good. Heck the first guitar I ever made was HORRIBLE in comparision. So when listening to others work be mindful of the effort they have put into it. And remember what your Monther said. "If you can't say something nicce, don't say anything at all."

the part i have issue with is "industry standard" you have something tangible i.e. specs that make the guitar able to stay in tune ,i have no problem with that being a standard,but,in songwriting and or playing,i believe as an art form it is subjective and who or what can the standards be ........

i once heard this guy say this at a guitar work shop i attended.
the only difference between me and jeff beck is about 5000 worth of practice hours to his favor. (i didnt realy like this saying)

i played for like 10 years and well i was playing i had a attitude and thought i was gonna be the best there is.so i practiced and practiced all the time and when i was done with that i practiced some more. well i gott a wake up call one time, i flew out to nashville one time and entered this big guitar playing contest.
it was open to any style, i realy thought i was the best and when i arrived i had determined in my mind that i had already won this thing. heck the only thing i played was what i liked, heavy heavy metal with lots of sweep picking, you know the yngwie style stuff.
well anyway i gott there and i was like #30 outta 200 or so players and after watching some of the other players play i realized that this was goona be easy( or so i thought) so i went up on stage and gave the performance of my lifetime and just let it rip as fast as i could. my performance was flawless, and the crowd although they were in awww having never seen this kinda thing to much did not applaud as much as i had hoped, well anyway most of the other guitarist there were either blues or country and becuase i hated both of these styles i realy thought i was different and superior but needless to say i did not win nor did i even leave a very good impresion on anyone. so i pretty much gave up on playing. for a year or two.

i started playing again and it was because of a young boy who heard some of my old 4 track recordings and asked me if id give him lessons. so i did and i taught him all that i knew over a period of 3 years. with the exception of the attitude thing of course.
ive since grown up and i have a love for all music and for all people now. if somone is expressing themselves through music i enjoy it. i believe there are alot of people out there that are just like i was when i was younger and they will learn the hard way to.
i have seen people on this forum trash others and tell them that there music is garbage. and all they accomplish is driving them away from music. i agree with you with this thread. i dont think im better than anyone else and if you post somthing i will listen and regardless of the style of music i will pass fair judgment on the performance not by my own taste in music.anywya this was a great idea for a thread and i hope more respond to this.

here is my motto. if you love music play it to the best of your ability and put all your soul into it, with the hopes that some younger people will here you and be inspired to play and learn.
its all about teaching to me i love to work with kids and especially kids that are missing somthing in there life like i was when i was younger. god bless all tim pate.

I consider myself an artist in that I feel I'm a creative person. Whether only I enjoy the things I create or other people do doesn't change the fact that I'm a creative person. As to criticizing other peoples artistic merit, who is qualified to give anything more than their opinion, and that's all it could ever be, an opinion. If great numbers of people all think you have it going on, cool, you can make a living as an artist. If nobody picks up on what you create, you're still an artist, you just have a day job.

No matter how good you think you are, there's always someone better. A lot of "artists" forget that, and the ones they are trashing while on their way up, sometimes get to be the ones to step on them on their way down.

I guess I just have to call it like I see it. I saw a band last night that overall sounded good. The guitar player was very good, he really had his chops down and was playing things that I would never attempt. But, his tone blew chunks! Very harsh sounding and too much gain. I couldn't stay longer than one set. For me, it's all about tone.

i don't really get into bashing other artist. For example I totally HATE Marylyn manson....but im not going to say that he sucks at what he does...cause its a form and style that i don't really understand.

this whole idea started around th grammy's a co worker and i are always having these conversations,anyhoo we got off on art somehow and basically stated what i did at th first of th thread ,he totally went off on this good art and bad art and how there should be "standards" my argument was i couldn't see how someones expression of how they felt could be put to standards ...maybe as a guide as to what genre it best fit but beyond that i have a problem ....and different genres of all art, paint ,music or whatever change or evolve and spring new forms how can we say what is the great art and the bad art .....
