Question about Sonar3 and looping

Thinking about purchasing Sonar and a Roland s124 with the computer interface. Wondering about how Sonar 3 deals with loops.

Right now I program my drums by using "one shot" drum loops. Essentially using Acid Pro like a drum machine, only far more intense. I like how I can zoom the grid in and out so I can get very detailed and elaborite. This way I get the exact drum beats I'm looking for and it sounds much more real than any drum machine I've spent time with.

The Sonar litterature I've read claims you can do similar stuff with loops, but the demo doesn't seem to have a way to program loops in this much detail. At best I get a one measure grid I can't zoom in on. Can Sonar do this sort of thing? And if so, can someone briefly explain how they do elaborite loops? Just wondering if this app is right for me or not before I spend a bunch of money....

Thanks,
Daff

From what I know about loops in sonar, is I take the sample loops on CD1 of Sonar3, then in the loop explorer I drag and drop the clips on an audio track in sonar. The clips are generally 1 measure long, then all I do is expand the loop to the length I need, then from the cd I choose other clips, like fill ins, crashes or different beats.

I also can make my own loops from actual songs, or other sources, like I made a loop out of Michael Jackson's drum intro of Billie Jean.

That is the farthest I went with loops in Sonar3.

Acid Pro 4.0
Why not use Sonar from the start? You know it's the best... :p

Well, I already use Acid Pro 4 but would like to record more than 1 input at a time, want to use a control surface, and I want to run everything in one app. (basically replace acid with something more intense)
Basically when I do drums, I'll use all one shots and no loops. Setup a couple kicks, 3 snares. A dozen hihats, Couple rides. Mulitple toms. This way the one shots can overlap so they ring out and I can change the way each one sounds. I see you can setup something similar in Sonar but I don't see how I can zoom a grid up to, say 64th notes so I can create a double snare shot or something.
Could you put the drum sounds in the included sampler and easily program the drums via midi?

Yes! Exactly!

I'm a fan of the DR-008 by fxPansion (came with Sonar 2 XL), but VSampler 3 (included with Sonar 3) can do the same thing.
