I'm an aspiring rap artist and I'm acquiring all the equipment to make myself a decent home studio.

I'm aiming to spend $200-$300 for the microphone.

Would some people with experience with home studios please suggest a great microphone for vocals, specifically rap.

Did a search but the results weren't overwhelming.

mics

well it all depends on which mic sounds good with your voice. since you have a little bit of dough i would say buy a BLUE. i.e. the baby bottle, bottle rocket stage 1 & 2., blue bird, kiwi, blueberry, dragonfly, etc. blue makes great mics. check them out! also, check craigslist to see if people in your area are selling used mics. just make sure they work like they're supposed too.

Anybody who would put a condencer in front of a HipHop or Rap artist doesnt know what they are doing...and will have to replace alot of mics and lose all thier money.

Shure SM7 is the mic you need...you wont ruin it with all the spit your clients will get on it.

CAD M9 Tube Large Diaphragm Microphone

I've been reading some great reviews for this microphone. What do you all think about this one, anyone used it?

Shure SM7 or EV RE20.

Both are dynamic mics and standards in the radio industry, too...

I wonder how good it sounds with spit on the diaphram:rolleyes:

I'm sure this guy knows what he's talking about. All the most famous rap albums of all time were done with a 58. They were in multi-million dollar studios but they pulled out the old 58s when it came time to lay down the vox.

:laughings:

All the rappers you know must have some salivary gland issues. You're being ridiculous.

We all have those problems...its just that some sing...and some rap...and mics in front of rappers get a shower...just dont be stupid...only an idiot would buy a $400 LD condenser mic just to ruin diaphrams:rolleyes:

LD condencers are better for female singers anyway...Id seldom even put one in front of a male.

No...they were done with SM7's.

You're a backwards dude, man.

Id sit here all day and debate...but I happen to have a couple of checks I have to take to the bank...a couple are from hip hop clients.

Im not backwards...just not retarded...I can allways switch the foam cover on my SM7...but do what you want...I just wonder why you noobs come here for advice when you allready know it all...stupid kids:rolleyes:

Uh Oh! Throwing out the Noob/Stupid kids line! Sounds like you're recording a bunch of stupid kids if they don't know how to properly address a microphone. I hope those checks don't bounce, man. Good luck.

I do agree that the SM7 is a great mic, but the rest of what you're saying is just not true.

Plenty of rap artists, good ones, use mid to large diaphragm condensers and tubed mics.

Condensation on the diaphragm, sure. Spit? Not likely. Not if you're using it right. Buy a pop filter and don't let the artist get so close....

That spit gets everywhere...I end up with the spit on the dynamics even with the screen...Im not going to put a 1G condencer in front of one...besides unless if it is a girl with a high voice you want a dynamic anyhow...dynamics are better with the low voices of males with any type of music you are recording.

Uh... no. Most dynamics generally start to roll off by the the second harmonic above the second formant in a male voice, which results in a stuffy sound. They roll off a lot of the sibilant sounds, too, so if your singer has good vocal technique, it ends up being harder to understand what they are singing.

Like I said, if you are getting spit on the diaphragm, your vocalist is about 2-3 FEET too close to the microphone.

I do hiphop music on an AT4040, but im a good distance away and at an angle from the mic. and the Pop filter's there. So, no spit on it at all and still sounds smooth.

But I'd probably invest on an SM58/57 and a tube mic, later on in life.

Oh yeah, don't forget about sound treatments too dude if you're going to pick up a condenser.

I appreciate everybodys feedback.

After a bit of research, along with everyone's suggestions, I've found that studio condensor microphones are best because of how sensitive they are.

I'm going to go with the Shure KSM27 microphone. I believe it seems to be a great microphone especially for the price of $200 at GC.
