Straight to vid in Oz. I enjoy it enough to keep it & the Ramones' parts are the best bit - lots of them & detail too like the pinky support in one of the barre chords in the bedroom clip.

Adding to the discussion of chords here.

The reason why power chords are so popular is because when you don't have a major or minor 3rd you have many more options for what chord to go to next, also with heavy distortion too many notes is no good.

Right, and any goofball can play a basic song with them. That's why they're so popular. It's just a root and fifth. They'll fit anywhere.

Exactly - it's the third that conveys the sense of key. Without it, you're not playing in ANY key.

Actually you can use power chords to convey a key, you have to use to chords to outline the scale though. if for example you are play in A major, play an A power chord then play C# power chord, since C# is the major third of A, you will begin outlining A major and the more chords you add the closer the song will sound to a major. Add in an E power chord and now you've completely outlined A major because an A major chord contains A C# and E.

That doesn't make sense to me. I'm not saying it doesn't make sense, because maybe I'm mis-understanding. But why would you play a C# or an E chord unless they're the chords you need to play for the song? You can't just randomly play a C# chord just to emphasize the major in the A chord. Besides, if you play a C# power chord, you're also playing a G# note, which will clash with the A.

I'm probably just not understanding what you mean.

Play them in progression, play A5, C#5, E5. then try soloing over that with A major. you don't play them all at once. but in a progression the power chords will outline the key of A major.

Listen to the track I posted in the beginning of this thread, its made up of all power chords, but because of the chords used it outlines F minor.

It could also be Dmaj9, F#m7, B9sus4, Gbm13, and others. All of those contain an A, C#, and E. Without the third you're just playing a bass line with powerchords.

Speaking of the Ramones...makes you wonder who did Joey Ramone's vocals on albums or what tricks they used. He is so off key live. Greg, I am surprised you like them since he "can't play his instrument" (voice). Clearly some magic was worked in the studio.

The third note of the scale is what give A major the A major sound. So if you play an A power chord then a C# power chord you've put the third note of the scale into the listeners ear hinting that the song is in A major.

I don't know..You can't really rely on that, although it may be an indicator.
There's no reason someone couldn't use A minor and C sharp major in a progression or, indeed, A major and C major.

You're right, the third note dictates whether a chord is major/minor, but the only way it can be certain is if the C or C# is IN the A chord.

The less chords the more possible keys it could be in, but if I played A5, C#5, E5, what key would you use to solo over it? you would have to use A major, or a mode of A major (A mixolydian, A lydian, etc.). So its not in one exact key, but it is in a key, the lead guitarists would determine the key based on note choice, but it'd have to be A major, or a mode of that.

I think this sounds pretty damn good.

It is most definitely 150bpm's. But this is nowhere near anything I would call punk. It's just a good, solid rock backing track.

Punk or rock, I relate to it at 75. That's what I hear when I join in.

You're not alone. I've been an unapologetic Ramones fanboy geek for 30 years.

Keep listening, you'll hear his barre chords everywhere. Blitzkrieg Bop is full of 100% barre chords. They're an integral part of his style and sound.

Listen to the Leave Home album. His tone is a little cleaner on that record and you can really hear the chime and major-ness of his barre chords.

And watch how he barres chords with the root on the A string. See if you can figure it out. It will open up new doors of awesomeness for your own rhythm playing if you're into that style..

Yeah, you're right.

Distort simple, rock with thirds. That's how my favorite folk music works.

Greg your not getting my point.

I get your point. I really do. I just think it's goofy and way out in left field. But if that's how you wanna do things, knock yourself out. I'm not trying to tell you otherwise. Just don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. :D

You can get a hammer-on thing going with the E string and A string in the barre chord as well. If the song's in A, then it works as a kind of drone when you use it in the barred D and E chords.
