Just wrote and recorded this one tonight. Let me know what you think I can improve on. Thank you!

Lyrics:

Sorry no more

I don’t wanna say sorry no more
Just wanna be the one you adore
I just want it like we had it before

I don’t wanna watch bombs hit the floor
I don’t wanna pick sides anymore
I don’t wanna keep track of the score

I don’t wanna believe
(It’s haunting me now)
Try to push it so far
(To the back of my mind)
Where the cobwebs will be
(Where we will be)
And stop asking for more

I don’t wanna say sorry no more
I don’t wanna go slamming the doors
I just want it like we had it before

I don’t wanna believe
(It’s haunting me now)
Try to push it so far
(To the back of my mind)
Where the cobwebs will be
(Where we will be)
And stop asking for more

First Mix:

Edit: I think it’s really coming along. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions/feedback. Here’s the current mix: Mix 6

If I would do anything it would be to bury the vocals a little - blend the into the guitars - the lead guitar is quite a track - really jumps out.

Agreed w the vocals! Lead guitar needs to be pulled back a bit too. I’ll see what I can do.

Well I thought that sounded pretty damn good as is. My only nit is I would give the snare a little sizzle and let it drive through the song. Nice work 👍

Definitely! It’s not punching through. And per usual, if I add the right frequencies to the snare the cymbals get a bit harsh. I might blend in a bit of snare sample just to bring out those specific frequencies.

I’m also going to re-record the drums in that quieter section in the middle. I recorded the guitars first and it was a little hard to follow my own tempo.

And speaking of that quieter section, any ideas of what to put in there? I’m thinking a simple piano line. Maybe a simple airy vocal line underneath?

Thank you for the feedback!

Damn gotta go to work and can’t play. Will take a deep listen later on
Cheers flyguy
Well when you get a chance…here’s where I’m at.

I blended in a subtle but very effective snare sample. It didn’t even need it on the softer section so I pulled it out during that part. I adjusted volumes and tweaked EQ. Added a simple piano part in the softer section. I also spent a little time balancing R and L EQ for lead and rhythm guitars because it seemed lopsided.

Now I need to fix the timing issues on the drums (re-record) the quieter section.

Here you go:

I gotta say that snare made a world of difference to me. Piano bit suits nicely, and I’m not picking up any drum timing issues in the middle section. Even if there are issues it’s not so important with this genre as a little loosy goosy is ok. Love the way it slams back into the song after the nice quiet middle bit. Nice job.

Yeah, that blended snare sample is only about 8-10% of the snare sound but it adds the cut for sure during the denser parts of the song. And it was too much during the softer part so I cut it out completely.

Thanks for bringing it up. I had the same thought but was being a purist (a lazy purist)!

And thanks for the encouragement on the drums (timing)…it still bugs me but maybe I can let it go?!

Hey maybe you should look at those drums. I know from my own experience that if something is bugging you it will always bug you. That’s pretty annoying with a few of my recordings whenever I hear them again. Gotta make yourself happy before anyone else. 😁

I put a lot of time trying to balance the lead vocals, backups, and lead guitar. I also added just a bit of presence and removed some mud from the vocals.

So I present to you…Mix 6

That mix is nearly perfect IMO- the back ground vocals are kind of in their own space - is that what you intented?

Yeah, I like the background vocals to be out of the way and in their own space. Sometimes I don’t pan so wide to get more of a “duet” feel (mainly in verses). But I definitely like to go bigger, wider, and out of the way in dense mixes and choruses.

Hey Fly - that tune is great fun. I'm a little late to the party and it sounds like you pretty much got the mix sorted. I wouldn't be much help there anyway because, despite home recording on some level for almost 40 years now, I'm just beginning to train my ears and learn to listen and mix.

I gave it less than two full listens and it's still going through my head an hour later. 8-) I know it's way too late for this suggestion, but the old school punk in me wants to hear it about 30% faster.😁 Good job!

Awesome, thanks!

Yeah, I could have gone faster on the tempo. But was going for that oldies Ramones/Riverdales/Methadones punk sound which I love. If you haven’t heard the Methadones or Riverdales check them out. Formed by some of the members from Screeching Weasel and done in the Ramones vein, but still has their own edge to it. It’s a really cool sweet spot for me. Here are a few of my favorites:

Thanks for those links - helpful to understand where you were coming from, and I think you nailed it. As others noted, this does have the pop sensibility of the 90's pop-punk movement but at a more laid back tempo than I associate with that genre. Of course, I wasn't paying too much attention at that point as I had largely stepped away from music and was starting down the rabbit hole of young family life. :ROFLMAO:

Keep having fun! 8-)
