Tried and failed. I might try to rewire my mixer and make it work that way.

You can't monitor the track you're going to punch in on the 38 unless you do it manually with the function button as mentioned above. You probably can punch out with the function button too. In order for the foot pedal to work you need it to be record ready with the function record button pressed in. When it's in you only get the input signal. Or is the track select button. 
Well, the button below the track number you're recording on. That's the one you can punch in and out with.
