I compared the two.
IMHO I feel like my bass drum cuts through the mix better because it has more attack. i.e. snap, click, pop etc...
I got it by adding 8k to it and compressing it.
when you say you doubled it...did you keep them in mono or pan them both hard?
known as "Big Mono".

What are you listening to the mixes on?

I'm really trying to understand what your saying (since the whole point of this is to learn). Compression REMOVES attack I thought, so you could increase the volume without clipping. I like a real HARD HITTING bass for this kind of music, so I have a TON of attack in the bass, I don't see how there could be any more than I have.

Now, you have more of the "click" sound coming through in your mix, and without any sub-bass, your drums cut through better, but on a full-sound system, mine hit way harder, and cut thru better IMHO.

Anyway, just to be clear, I am just trying to understand your critique.

As far as the guitar sound, you are right. I listened to it in my truck on the way to work, and they are quite a bit thin sounding. I am going to remix with them "fattened" up.

Thanks,

NL5

YES!

I thought this was supposed to be a LEARNING excercise more than a true "competition".

Well, I just tweaked the drum to have more "click", and in doing so, I remembered something important - translation. I think my kick sounded good on a big system, but I shut the sub off on my computer speakers, and the bass almost dissappeared. I think I see what you were saying now. We were thinking of "attack" in totally different ways. My kick had a real hard attack, but it was heavy in the sub frequency range.

Tell me if this sounds better -

Thanks,

NL5

New one is up NL5

And this is an interesting piece. ;)

Have NEVER mixed metal b4 so when i post mine tommorrow I want every critique on the planet!!!!!!!!

For my own personal reasons I have not listened to any one elses mix so I have nothing to compare it to :)

OK, this should be my last entry (for now, at least.)

Too many effects/doubles/etc, my machine is crawling while mixing; it's getting a tad bit difficult to make any more changes. I added the toms, which muddied up a little my kick drum, but it's nothing terrible.

I tried to avoid smiley face guitars - I like a full, smooth midrangey sound. Granted, it may not be 100% appropriate for this genre (though IIRC Motorhead was pretty midrangey most of the time), the sound of scooped guitars makes me cringe.

Anyway, this was fun. I hadn't ever mixed metal before, and I don't really listen to it anymore, so it was fun to get back into things. Actually, this is one of the first full songs I've ever mixed - most of the past two years I spent recording 30 second fragments and mixing them to death for experimentation purposes...

EDIT: I changed some tiny stuff - this is #12. Giles, please put this one in the submissions directory, thanks!

good to hear im not alone.
i like a good midrange in my guitars too.
i used to dig scooped stuff till sum1 said i cant hear ur guitar from 50 feet away (at a gig in my school gym)

nice mix btw'
i like effect on the vox

I must be catching on, I've been working with a slow attack and fast release on the kick too :)

I never in a million years would have spiked it over 6k, I even had a bypassed filter cutting it somewhere up around there, but a lot of the percussive nature of the track is up there, which I guess makes some sense.

Thanks :) (well, I'm assuming that meant 'your mix is sweet' and not 'it's sweet that this is your last entry' :D )

heh. thats too funny. Am i that blunt? Heh, maybe i am...

Ahem...anyways.

your mix is lacking in the brightness department its "dark" and "lo-fi" sounding to me.
The bass guitar needs to be tamed. Its dynamics are jumping all over the place. Swat it down with some more compression, then back it down in the mix a bit. The guitars arent shining through enough. Drums sounded ok to me. maybe a little 10k brightness (try a shelf) in the overheads would de-dull the entire mix a bit.

here is my mix entry i havent had a chance to take a break and listen to it again so for now this is not my final mix but here it is

Toms could go up a bit. Other than that its a good balance.
Its needs some eq to add general character IMO. Spice it up a little.

Hmm..If speed metal was to a spice--what spice would it be?
Black pepper maybe? meh..too boring.. Tarragon. Yeah,,your mix needs more Tarragon.

xfinsterx re listen i realised i had the kick eq in bypass on the first pass now you should hear the toms clearly and the level of the toms is based on the 200 metal cds i own this is the norm in metal mixes

btw i must admit i not only dug the song but the tracking on this project was
great its always cool when your mixing on a project that was tracked right makes the whole mixing process a joy vs a chore btw my working mix has only been eqed and taming compression its really hard to get to creative from a simple mix you could do crazy background vocal things but its out of place in this style of music to me it just sounds cheesey and unprofessional im gonna do the light automation tomorrow and then pretty much call it done

How many more revision do u plan to do. It is tiresome to KEEP updating it every day. and already I ran across 5 versions of this mix. When you get to the VERY last revision let me know so I can post it :)

Doulos is up.

BTW I hate to sound pitchy but posting every single version of a mix when a person has 11 of them is a nuisance. Better for you to mix it. Take a day off. come back and listen to it and then finalize it then post it. :) That way I never get lost as to which mix i am posting.

The last contest was much more civil. The max revisions was 3 and that seemed reasonable.

I'd have to agree....... in a real world situation, a mix engineer isn't showing their mix to anyone until they consider it a final..........
