Right on riccardo! Good luck to you. :)

Thanks, I really need some luck to work out somethings that is up with the other competitors :)

this aint sour grapes....

but i was wondering in the NEXT contest, if the rules could specify that we are not allowed to replace any of the tracks? I know my mix is terrible, but i am pretending i have a client (ok, a client who will never work with me again, and will blackball me...but still...lmao)

this is a mixing contest, right? I wanna learn mixing.

BTW...for those of you who are very good at making new tracks, and keeping only the vox track, there is a site i HIGHLY reccomend for you guys. BTW, i think you guys are really good at this stuff. I cant do it...:)

www.yourbeats.com

they have regular contests where you get an acapella vocal track and have to make all the music tracks for it and mix it.

if we were hired to mix a famous group, we wouldnt have the option of replacing tracks with virtual performances.

next contest i run will have a no remix rule in place.
It will also no doubt be the most difficult mix thus far in the contests.

Put your mix hats on!
Cause this is gonna challenge you!! :D

Should be alot of fun.

yeah, that sounds like a good idea... otherwise it should be a contest of who can produce the best recording of a given song... which is another cool idea...

Doug H.

Your mix was good.
I think the balance was a little off though due to the bass line being a little overbearing.

NL5.

I listened to the 2nd entry.
Your balance of the instruments and voice were a-ok
Only thing i noticed was the overall eq spectrum was alittle heavy in the 900 to 1k region.
Which gave your mix a rather "boxy/woody sound.

Nice work overall fellas. :)

Thanx again for taking care of the entry posts for the contest man, i really appriciate it! :)

So who all performed at the detriot event?
Sounds like you had fun! :)

Floetry, Eric Robeson, jaguar Write and a host of Local Artists that smoked these nationals.

Randy Scott smoked them youngins and did a FAR better show. YEAH DETROIT!!!!!

Even the Zulu Dancers (Soweto) KILLED. These youngins need to know how to put on a show, Just dont' stand in front of a mic and make noise. Gimme somthing to look at. I Remember the Prince Concert I mixed at the Universal Center in Chicago back in 1997. That Man Put on a SERIOUS Show.

IMO anytime your FOH is yawning, you're boring. LOL

See, i'm betting that's why my mixes are missing so much bass sound. i'm not black enough!!!!!!! :D :p

LOL I am not black enuff. My Irish decent waters me down a bit. LOL.

rule of thumb however, get an SPL meter and mix at around 78db A-Weighted. Will make you listen harder and mix warmer. resist the urge to turn it up. except for short periods of time to verify when cranked it pumps

doung and cary your files are up

NL5 which file is your official entry?

Giles-
That was quick, thanks man. :)

I wanted to post a few comments on a few of these mixes. Just my two cents - I only hope it helps.

NL5-
The acoustic is a bit harsh. Try a slight (-2db dip) at around 5k but then also add some air at around 10 or 12K. Maybe about +4db
The drums are a pain huh? That tom2 was over the top. Your drums could use some brightness, but do it by reducing some of the mud. Make small adjustments and keep checking against your reference material. Resiste the urge to always add when using EQ. There is an effect in equalization that is interesting; an adjustment on one end of the spectrum has an oposite affect at the other end. For example -2db @ 250hz sounds similar to boosting the upper mids (5Khz).
The bass needs some serious work too. IMO, there is too much lower mids in the raw track. It may help clean up the sound if you have a dip in the 400 hz area.

Doug- I couldn't listen to your MP3??? I got an error message.

Bennychico- that compressor is pumping. Do you hear it at the beggining of each vocal line?
Is seems the drums are in mono. Did you have the overheads panned right and left?
The instrument levels seem in the ballpark. Cool.
