I suppose some future mix contest could be something like "put up your best mix within 24 hours" (or whatever time limit). That would really put your basic mixing skills, and especially your workflow, to the test.

This has kind of dragged on, hasn't it. Maybe long enough for me to try again? :)

three weeks is fine, gives everyone a chance to jump in if they want.
but 24hrs???

i had to have nl5 (thank you by the way) mail me a cd so i could jump in cause my connection is so slow.

I admit that 24 hours would be a bit extreme...

But imagine a scenario where the client has blown the entire budget for their demo on tracking, and you have minimal time in which to give them the best mix possible. It happens. Not every client has unlimited resources, or plans properly to avoid running out of time.

I can definitely see how the people who started the day it was available would be a little anxious, but I'm really glad it's gone this long because I just stumbled on to it, so it's given me time to participate. My final mix is done...I'll post it whenever I can figure out how to make the mp3 conversion process not completely transform my mix to poo.

I hate you mp3!!!

yea...the deadline is a little bit long on this one, but there are probably some people still starting on it. Either way, how do i enter?...do i just upload my mp3 and im good? or do i actually have to talk to someone? I have my final version (its not online yet) and i wanted to make sure it was entered.

I'll be a late entrant if I can ever get the file online.

I've been working on this for a while... mine's a bit different. Is this contest accepting remixed mixes?

There's probably tweaks I could make, and different stuff I could try to get things to sit a bit tighter, but I don't really have a bunch of experience mixing so it would be nice to get a bit of feedback on my efforts. It's definitely a learning experience.

Apologies in advance... good God, what have I done?

Ok, this be the link.

I'm pretty burnt out on this tune, so this is my final entry.

Here's my second shot at this:

Let me know what you think if you listen to it. Thanks.

Remixes are allowed under the rules. Your entry is very unique and I like the overall approach. I think it still needs a lot of tweaks to be competitive. The feedback in the intro is overdone (I like the intro a lot otherwise). The tempo has a weird feel in the first minute, seems all over the place. The second verse where you just used the backing singer is cool, but when she gets to the chorus, her voice isn't strong enough to sustain the song, and she's notably flat on a few notes. Add back the lead singer there to help. For the final verse/chorus, I'd go full on with the backing singers to bring the song to a climax.

Listening on PC speakers so I'll limit my comments to style, but the mix itself seems OK.

Ideally everybody will get final mixes posted on NL5's site, or get NL5 to post a link to your mp3. I'll ask on the deadline for everybody to confirm their final entries as well.

Thanks for your comments.

Once you get into doing 10 splices to put a verse/chorus vocal together, plus many of the other included weirdnesses, most of the work I did on this was production and wave editing rather than straight mixing, so it's nice to see a bit of a receptive reaction to the overall mess.

I did try to mess with the rhythm stuff to get a kick / snare / bass thing happening. After listening to some of the other entries, there's some folks here that are particularily good at that sort of thing. It's nice to be able to compare the differences just to see what's possible with a different approach. There's a few other tricks I'd like to try, but chances are good that I'm done with this entry.

I definitely learned a lot about wave editing on this project - fun stuff.

I wouldn't go that far. I think the beat is cool. The chipmunk backing vocals are hilarious. But I can't get past the lead vocal. A vocode section or two, à la Beck on "Where It's At", could be cool, but this is way overdone. You gotta keep the integrity of the lead vocal.

During the break I think you gotta add something with a bit more hip-hop flavor, some turntables or something. Or crank the lead guitar, like Beasties for example.

Put a bit more work into it, I think it could be a serious entry.

Haha, OK, I might just do that if I can get around to it. Thanks for the ideas. Are we allowed to submit more than one mix to the contest?

the problem with the mix is that your more proud of your editing than of the mix, and it's kinda mixed like that.

can hear the edit at the lead brake. whats the hahahahaha?????? (i think i like it though)

like a lot of the things you did though. :D
