Promoting music online?

I'm not talking about gigging cover bands. I'm talking about bands that write their own "original" songs that sound exactly like some other band. There has to be some level of an original sound to make up for it. The only way a cover band will sell CDs is if they sell it at their shows to loyal fans. Even then it's kind of boring to listen to covers when you can listen to the original, unless they did something to make it their own.

As a music fan, I do like some covers, but mostly the ones where they took a stupid song and made it bad ass. Most of the time bands ruin classics in my opinion. I know I've ruined a few covers by turning them into Death Metal songs, but the people that like Death Metal think it's the shit.

I never said I wanted to be anything like them or have anything to do with them lol. I accept the fact that I'll never be a "star". I would prefer not to be actually, but most the people who are musicians, do dream that dream and it's sad that they think some of the stuff people are suggesting will actually help them in anyway. I'm actually related to people, like my father, sister, cousins, uncles etc. who are far more known than you and I. One of my uncles wrote a very huge hit song in the 80s. My father wrote and performed hits songs, my sister is coming up and will be there sooner or later. Some of my cousins are in the music/film industry in some way, another is an actor etc. Who isn't into this shit? That's the real question :D

How this has anything to do with the topic I have no idea, but if I were a huge star you can bet your ass I would be selling my big wet turds on ebay and you can eat it if you want it :P

So this thread seems to be wallowing in the extremes, which isn't particularly helpful to anyone.

As I see it, there are a few major levels that a music career can attain:

1. Basic hobbyist - This would be where you sometimes get together to jam with your friends. You might record in your basement or attend some open mics too. In this case, you don't really need any online promotion. Just create a Facebook event for the one show you play a year and invite your friends.
2. Dedicated hobbyist - You still have a day job, but your primary leisure activity is your music. You may be in a cover band and gigging every week. Or you may be in an originals band desperately trying to make sure your McDonalds paycheck covers your rock habit. In this case, online promotion is pretty important. Those extra 2 or 3 friends who show up could be the difference between getting paid in beer and getting paid in nothing.
3. Professional - Making music is your primary source of income. You've got the "1000 true fans" and you live in your van. In this case online promotion is really important. The extra people who go to your show because of a Twitter reminder may help you have enough gas to make it to the next town.
4. Actually famous musician - You will probably never be this, but if you ever reach this point, have your manager take care of your online promotions.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Nothing you're saying has anything to do at all with promoting your music online. All I'm saying is you can promote online, but you should focus on things that will pay off instead of wasting your time on all the BS. Simplified version just for you. After reading your last reply to me, it's become clearly obvious that you have no idea what you're talking about. Save it for someone who cares about fruit cake fantasy bull shit LOL...

@ Vomit, I agree, but I'm not dealing with extremes. I'm dealing in logic and reality unlike PDP. LOL
