I think it's more logical and practical to, like I've said already, find your niche and just keep playing music. Promote to people who actually like the type of music you play. Send your music to be reviewed by people who like the kind of music you play. You'll get far less negative feed back from people who are into your music lol. Slowly over time you'll build up a small fan based and make as many new friends as you can who support what you do. If you're like me, with no band, and all you can do is keep making new music, take your time and just keep at it. Perfect your style and the fans you gain over the years of work will appreciate it and support you. Don't expect to get rich, just love what you do and if it pays off down the road when you're old it'll be well worth it.
People love cult classics and you can saturate your niche over the years and work your way to being a prominent figure of your genre.
If you're a cover band or sound like GNR, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Britney spears etc. etc. etc. Don't expect do be the slightest bit successful. You have to try to be original, similarities are fine, but no one wants to hear a knock off band. They can just listen to the original and hear much better music in most cases.
