Hi all, I'm a newbie to the forum world and hope someone can give some insight to this problem. I had been using an old Dell XPS with XP and an M-Audio cheap interface. Worked for years. I recently upgraded to a Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40. Playback has these little "ticks" in it both on newly recorded files and on old files that played fine through the old interface/computer. So I went out and bought a new (but inexpensive) HP computer, upgraded to Sonar X2, and I still have the problem with newly recorded files. Here's a list of the other things I tried:
replaced firewire cable
put my son's identical focusrite in the system - still ticks
ran latency tests on new computer (came out fine)
set clock sync to "internal" on the Mix control
optimized computer for audio performance per focusrite help desk.

Still it ticks. What am I missing?

Thanks a $%^&ton for your help.

Computer: "Working"

Thanks for the tip and the link. I'll read it tonight.

OK, went to MicroCenter and exchanged my combo 800/400 firewire card for a 400 only from Vantec (as proscribed by the above article). Installed it and I still have the same problem. I guess I'll go online and buy the Texas Instruments or SIIG card that Focusrite recommends.
Frustrated!

Still perplexed

My case with the focusrite help desk has been passed to another technician. I've also consulted the Cakewalk FAQ section and tried everything they suggest. Still the pops and clicks are there in playback. Anyone?

Increase buffer size maybe on Saffire mixcontrol?
Does Sonar have have performance meter or something similar that could show how heavy load is on computer?

Get the latest drivers from Focusrite homepage.

I'd do the following:

uninstall all Focusrite stuff (mixingcontrol, drivers, etc...)
re-download all the latest files from the website (even if you already have them - you don't know if a file got corrupted when you downloaded them the 1st time)
Install all software before you hook up interface
cross fingers
plug it all in and see if it works properly.

I've seen a million Focusrite users with various issues. The only people that don't have issues are the ones who did the above procedure. I was luck enough to stumble across this advice before I bought my interface. I carefully followed the procedure and I've been lucky so far. Mine has worked flawlessly - the preamps rock (once you get the stupid things working!!)

Good luck man

When dealing with Windows firewire interfaces, you ONLY want TexasInstruments chips.
(Someone may pop up and say some VIA or other chips may work. May. TI is the gold standard.)

Belkin and SIIG cards are known good TI chip cards.

I don't know if this is still an issue, but on win7 you need to install the legacy firewire driver.

Perplexed but working

Thanks for all the above responses. I will lay low until I get the TI chip firewire PCIe card and see how it works. Then I'll follow the advice for downloading the focusrite drivers from the web site. Thanks all. I'll let you know what haps.
