Probably a simple question (I hope)

How do I 'hook up' my recording units (one is an analogue tascam 4 track, t'other is a mini-disc tascam 4 track thing) to my PC so that I can mix songs down and make mp3's and all that?

I.e. What leads do I need? I assume this'll be fairly straightforward.

Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Run the line out from your tascam into the audio line-in on the back of your comp. Then open up a recording program (there are free ones like Audition or cheap ones like Acoustica Mixcraft), hit record on the comp and press play on the 4-track.

For a great software program, free trial and very inexpensive registration, google "reaper audio" and follow the links. Another fantastic cheapie is n-track, for which there is a forum here. I use Reaper for most of my recording these days; it's incredibly powerful and very easy to learn.

You might need to get creative with cables. Radio Shack is a great place to find the one adapter you're missing. Here is a rundown of the more likely connectors you'll encounter.

That's right. Connect the line out from your device to the line in on your pc's soundcard. You'll either need a 3.5->3.5 plug or 2xRCA->3.5 depending on your device. That is assuming your soundcard has a 3.5 plug on the back, but seeing as you're asking the question I will assume it does (as most 'beginner/standard' card do).

You then open up your favourite app and choose to record from line in (I like goldwave personally, it's simple and small). You hit record on your pc then hit play on your device. Once the song is finished just stop everything.

Then you just trim the track down to remove silence at the start/end on the pc and save as mp3. Then you upload it here for us to give you tips!

hooking up your 4 trk

hey i dont think your 4 trk could hook up to a computer if you trying to do that you will probably need a bunch of accessesories it might be easier if your 4trk had a cd burner then you could just burn a wav. file from your 4 trk put it on a disk then put that disk into your computer's cd drive from this stage all you'll need is recording program maybe something like sonar or cubase i would go for sonar cause its cheaper and you only need it to retrieve the wav. file that you burn from there when you put you burned wav. file into your computer your computer will open your file for you . to be honest i went through the same thing so all you need is a cd burner (if you can hook one up to your 4 trk) and a recording program like sonar. one more thing still being honest you can eliminate all that hasle by simple getting a digidesign mbox2 it sells for around 600.00 (canadian dollar) it comes with a recording program (protools) and a console that you can simply plug you mic or guitar right into and on your computer you can acually see your gtr track being crated on you computer screen. let me know how it goes fretboarder@hotmail.com
