I am thinking about purchasing a pro tools system for my studio, but I am a little worried that I will lose the use for my Soundcraft Ghost 32 Channel board. I have heard it is possible to route the outputs from the pro tools hardware into the board so I can mix the ghost. I'm wondering what the most effective way to get the most outputs in to my board is, whether its a specific interface by digidesign or running through ADATS (i have 4)? Any help would be appreciated. I am looking to get 16-32 outputs into the board.

most you can get is 18 with the 002 or 001. If you want more you need to step it up to the HD units.
you can run 8 line outs from the LE units into your ghost and Adat out into your Adats...then I'm guessing just line out of those (sorry, I've never actually used an Adat...lol). And then you've got S/PDIF out too, which you'll need to find another way to get those out into your console, maybe some S/PDIF to analog converter. Then in PT you just set each track up to go out it's own output.
an HD unit would make things a lot simpler though

thanks for the advice....what would I need if I got HD, i.e. which interfaces and hardware? How many outputs would I be able to get with that?

there are several different combinations you can get. They are called HD|1, HD|2 Accel, and HD|3 Accel. First you need the audio interface. You can choose from 192 I/O, 192 Digital I/O, 96 I/O and 96i I/O. All four have different features, # of inputs, and price ranges. Then you need to get a Core card (HD|1 card) which supports up to 32 channels of I/O and is required for all the devices. Then you can add optional Accel cards to increase performance and the amount of inputs to Pro Tools.
It can get complicated, but prepare to spend about $10,000 just to get you started. But you could get up to 192 channels of I/O at one time if you wanted.

thanks so much that really clears it up. My studio is loosing clients because we have not switched to pro tools yet. You would be surprised at how many people just dont even bother if you dont have it yet. Ok well thanks again.
