Preamp that will give more clarity and sheen

I heard that when you load the sm7 properly (500ohms) it sounds amazing. The UA610 and the focus rite ISA1 have variable impedances that can do this. Also the GRACE preamps are perfect for the sheen when you find the juicy spot of the gain. Check out Guitar center used site for amazing deals, I got so much stuff for very little money!!!

So are you saying the 500 ohms is the right impedance to use with the sm7. Then it truly shines?

Hmm. I'd be interested to know from someone how it actually pans out as far as response vs loading.
500 is getting fairly low (what's the mic's imp?). For example don't guitars get duller as the input loading goes up?

It really depends on the source. The Vintech I use has a 300/1.2K switch. It doesn't seem that the mic enjoys one over the other. The sound it is recording is the deciding factor for me.

update: I got a rane ms1 to try with my sm7 and it was not going well...I was waiting for my vienna and mxl 9090 to come in and they have. The 9090 is good for its price but on my voice the vienna blows the sm7 and the mxl outta the water. Crisp and clear! the sm7 really sounds radio-ish next to it whereas it didnt with other condensers. Very happy with the vienna and it looks like it'll be my go-to mic for my vocals.

Thanks for all the help guys

i've been using an ADK Hamburg for many years now.... really like it on vox.
it also works well as a room mic, and close mic on guitars, percussion, nice mic.

vienna is not much different

Hamburg has a much bigger red light district than Vienna. I hope that doesn't mean it's clipping! :)

To the OP--glad you found a mic that gives you the sound you want on your voice! As I said something like 8 pages ago, that's always the best way to proceed. Sounds like I should investigate ADK mics (if they even have an Aussie distributor) since my taste in recording tends to be bright and crisp!
