preamp in general?

This is coming right on the heels of a question about the necesity of pre-amps but that was with specific regard to vocals.
I am considering getting just a 1010lt and recording through that--should a pre-amp be used? The software can boost volumes...

Also, are there mixers that can have each channel output after amplification... eg. you can listen to the mix on the headphones jack but each channel runs out to a port on your 1010?
 
The 1010LT has a pair of mic preamps on two of its channels...

The mixer feature you are describing is called a direct out, and is available on many mixers, but not on bargain mixers.

Yeah, there are 2 preamped channels.. but the others aren't. So for the others... external preamp crucial?
 
It depends on what you want to do.

If you have lots of line-level sources (a synth, a drum machine, a guitar through a POD, etc.) then two preamps might be enough.

If you want to have eight mics open, then yes, preamps are crucial. You need to get their signals to line level to be able to plug them into a Line In. If this is your case, you would probably do better with a Delta 1010 and a good mixer.
