Preamp and or Compressor fmr rnc really nice

I am in the market for some new front end. I currently run an alesis 3630 compressor into an m-audio duo pre and then into a mac logic system.

I make kind of modern quirky folk stuff. Lots of vocals, acoustic guitar, snare brushes, double tracking etc.

The pre amp is fine for now but am looking at upgrading to a system with more than 2 Channels in the mid-future.

I have sold the alesis so I have no compression available apart from software which is ok but not ideal.

I definitely need a really nice stereo compressor and am currently considering the fmr really nice compressor.

I figure it will be fine for stereo tracking at the mo and if I get a bigger card, I can just get more compressors. Fucking simple!

My question is am I better off waiting and getting an all in one compressor/preamp like a p2 or twinq or something and also...

Can I use the compressor as a kind of gain boost for the preamp with lower gain dynamic mics.?

I want to spend as little as possible.

I want to end up with something I will be proud to pass down to my grandchildren after years of careful use and abuse.

The RNC is probably the best all around compressor you can buy for under $1000 (new). Works particularly well in super nice mode for acoustic instruments and the like. It is a relatively transparent compressor compared to a more colored unit like a distressor or the new RNLA. I would suggest getting one instead of an all in one box as it will be more flexible in the long run. You won't likely outgrow it, even if you ultimately get better gear. I have a couple of them and they are quite useful. Do note that it is a stereo and not a dual mono compressor if that makes a difference to you. That is, you can't run the two channels separately - you either have single mono or stereo. If I wanted more of a color compressor on a budget I'd probably look at the new RNLA. I already have an opto compressor (Peavey AMR VC/L-2) which the RNLA is supposed to emulate, but I'm considering picking one up anyway.

Other inexpensive, but decent compressors include the older Symetrix models (SX 206, SX 208 and the older 501 (with the toggle power switch). The SX models typically go for @$50-75 used and the 501 for @$100. Not as all around useful as the RNC but very useful nonetheless. The 501 is great on bass.
 
Drawmer, Klark Teknik, TL Audio, DBX, and BSS all make compressors that I like MUCH better than an RNC for less than $1000. That siad, the RNC is not a bad deal. I feel like it is priced just about right for how useful it is. In the end it may cost you a little more to buy all the units seperately than just getting a 2 channel strip like the Toft ATC-2. Whether or not it is worth it to wait is really up to you though:)

I'm assuming you meant the preamp first, and then the compressor. :D :p
