I'd been mulling over the purchase of a DMP3, which I know is a widely used mic pre-amp, especially across these forums. The DMP3 would run right into the Delta 44 to the PC. After some further contemplation, I was wondering if it would be worth it to get a Mackie 1202-VLZ instead. I can get a used one for about $250, but have no idea what it would sound like running into the Delta 44 for recording purposes. I know it's got the XDR pre-amps, but didn't know how good they were. I assume they're not tubes, but I thought I'd check these forums for input.

So the question is, would a 1202-VLZ do the job, running a couple SM57's to a Delta 44?

I will attempt to derive my own conclusions between the DMP3 and the 1202-VLZ from

.

Any further input is welcome, but by info I have gleaned, I think I'll go with an ebayed Mackie, see if I like it, and then try to ebay it back if I don't. Thing is, I don't see these flying off the shelves. On the other hand, GC doesn't sell the DMP3, claiming either that it's discontinued or that they have discontinued selling it. I was a little confused by the sales guy when he explained it to me.

Also, the way I see it, it's not necessarily a bad thing to own both a 1202-VLZ *and* a DMP3. :)

I used to have a Mackie VLZ1604. I thought the pres masked the nuances of the microphones, making them sound too similar. Now we are using either a DMP3 or a Tampa pre. They seem much more detailed and dimensional than the Mackie.
