powering on my mics

Kind of elementary question here. I have a set of 603's and a M-box. What the correct way to engage the phantom power so i dont mess up my mics? As of now i am just plugging everything in, turning down the gain on the M-Box, and then pushing the phantom power button. The level meter in Pro Tools jumps a bit when i do this.

Yeah, you've got it right and that's pretty much it. Just remember to Never plug or unplug anything while you have the gains up and the phantom power on... make you've turned the gains down and the phantom power OFF before plugging or unplugging anything.
 
i remember the sound guy in a local gig joint who wired his own leads ... badly. one night we were getting ready to soundcheck and the band before us were using acoustics so the guy switched on the phantom for the DIs ... and two of the mic stands went live with 48V. it was dangerous but bloody funny!
